Chapter 1 - The First Landing

The private jet touched down at Heathrow under a heavy, iron-gray London sky that mirrored the cold determination settling in my chest. Connor and Madison were fast asleep in the plush leather seats behind me, exhausted by the sudden upheaval of their lives, yet blissfully unaware of the financial warfare we had just escaped. As the cabin door unsealed and the damp chill of a British autumn rushed in, my phone buzzed incessantly against my palm. The missed calls were piling up—twelve from Bradley, three from his mother, and one frantic text from Brittany demanding to know if I had "kidnapped" the children.
I ignored them all, sliding the device into my trench coat pocket. My attorney, Marcus Vance, was waiting at the private aviation terminal with a black umbrella and a reassuring nod. Marcus had spent the last four months operating in the shadows, unearthing the digital paper trail that Bradley thought he had meticulously erased.
"The children are settled?" Marcus asked as we stepped into the back of a waiting Daimler.
"They're sleeping," I replied, staring out the tinted window at the blurring neon lights of the city. "Did the trap spring?"

Marcus offered a thin, razor-sharp smile. "Better than we anticipated. The clinic doctor didn't just ask about the conception date, Sarah. He asked about the genetic markers on the pre-natal screening form. Bradley didn't read the fine print on the fertility clinic's intake paperwork. He didn't realize that standard chromosomal profiling in private concierge clinics automatically cross-references family medical histories for insurance pre-authorization."
A cold thrill ran down my spine. Bradley had spent years convincing me that our modest lifestyle was due to bad investments and tightening margins. But the secret folder sitting in my leather briefcase told a completely different story. It wasn't just hidden money; it was an empire built on deception, funded by accounts Bradley thought were invisible, and anchored by a secret he was about to discover he couldn't buy his way out of.
