Chapter 14 - Shadows from the Past

While our lives in London were settling into a peaceful, purposeful rhythm, shockwaves were still rippling through the New York social scene. Tiffany, realizing that Bradley’s criminal indictments meant her palimony lawsuit was a dead end, decided to launch a desperate media campaign to salvage her reputation.
She booked an interview with a digital tabloid gossip channel, claiming she had been an "innocent victim" of Bradley Reynolds’ elaborate deception, and openly blaming me for "abandoning" the family and orchestrating a vindictive financial ambush.
Connor happened to see a headline pop up on his tablet while browsing a sports news site. He walked into my study, his young face furrowed with worry, holding the screen out to me.
"Mom... is this about us? Who is this lady talking about you on TV?"
I closed my laptop, gently taking the tablet from his hands, and sat down on the sofa next to him. I looked into my son’s intelligent, perceptive eyes—eyes that had seen too much stress during our final months in New York.
"People sometimes make bad choices, Connor, and when things fall apart, they look for someone else to blame," I explained calmly, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "We don't need to worry about what people say across the ocean. Our lives are right here, and we are safe."
Connor nodded, pressing his head against my shoulder. "I like London, Mom. I don't ever want to go back to that old house."

"We're never going back, sweetie," I whispered, kissing the top of his head.
Marcus handled the tabloid fallout within twenty-four hours. A single, polite cease-and-desist letter detailing Tiffany’s own complicity in receiving stolen offshore funds was enough to make the gossip channel pull the segment down before it even finished broadcasting nationally. Tiffany vanished from the public eye just as quickly as she had entered it.
