Chapter 5 - The London Safehouse

Morning light poured through the tall windows of the Kensington townhouse, illuminating the polished wood floors and the smell of fresh pastries. Connor and Madison were already downstairs, sitting at the kitchen island, chatting happily with the nanny Marcus had arranged for us. To them, this was a grand adventure—an unexpected holiday in Europe. They didn’t know about the bitter court battles, the frozen assets, or the betrayal that had shattered our family tree.
I stood by the window, sipping black coffee, watching the steady stream of London commuters rushing past on the damp sidewalk. My phone rang. It wasn't Bradley this time; it was Marcus calling from his Manhattan office.
"Good morning, Sarah. I trust you slept well?" Marcus’s voice crackled through the phone with professional satisfaction.
"Like someone who just woke up from a ten-year nightmare," I replied. "What's the status in New York?"
"Absolute chaos," Marcus chuckled. "Bradley tried to access his primary business accounts this morning to pay off a margin call, only to find that every single routing number has been flagged for federal asset seizure review. Because we attached the divorce settlement amendments to proof of corporate fraud and tax evasion—thanks to the ledger Bradley carelessly left synced to the home iPad—the district attorney’s office took a vested interest in his financial portfolio before breakfast."
"And Tiffany?"
"She packed her bags and left him within two hours of learning her credit cards were declined," Marcus said. "Turns out, loyalty was never her strongest trait. Eleanor and Brittany are currently camped out in Bradley’s corporate lobby, screaming at receptionists because their country club memberships were revoked."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, watching Madison laugh at something Connor whispered to her. "He thought he could strip me of everything and leave me with nothing while he walked away into the sunset."
May you like
"Instead," Marcus added smoothly, "he walked straight into a federal trap of his own making. The judge signed the emergency custody ratification order twenty minutes ago. You have full legal custody, and Bradley has zero legal standing to contest it from across the Atlantic while under criminal investigation."
"Keep the pressure on, Marcus," I said softly. "I want every single asset legally repatriated to the children's trust before he even realizes he’s facing prison time."
