Chapter 12 - THE VISITOR FROM THE PASTWe stepped out into the sleek, glass-walled reception area. Sitting on the modern leather sofa, wringing her hands nervously, was a woman in her late fifties wearing a faded trench coat. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from crying.

As soon as she saw Ryan, she stood up abruptly, her knees trembling.
"Mrs. Miller?" Ryan muttered, his voice laced with shock. He took a few steps forward. "You... you were the head pediatric nurse at the Zurich clinic twenty-five years ago. My mother said you passed away abroad."
The woman—nursing supervisor Clara Miller—burst into fresh tears and shook her head violently. "I didn't pass away, Ryan. Elena paid me a fortune to disappear and keep my mouth shut. She threatened that if I ever returned to the country, her security team would make sure I never saw my family again."
I stepped forward, my instincts as a corporate lawyer locking onto every detail. "Why are you here now, Mrs. Miller? What made you risk coming forward?"
Clara looked between the two of us, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "Because I saw the news this morning. I saw that Julian and Elena were arrested. The guilt... it has eaten away at my soul every single day for a quarter of a century. You deserve to know the entire truth about who you are, Ryan."
Ryan’s face went pale. He gestured toward the private conference room. "Please. Sit down and tell us everything."
Once we were all seated behind closed doors, Clara pulled a worn, leather-bound diary from her handbag and placed it gently on the table.
"Twenty-five years ago, Elena didn't just swap a baby to secure an inheritance," Clara began, her voice shaking with emotion. "She gave birth to a healthy baby boy—you, Ryan. But Julian’s wife gave birth on the exact same night at the same clinic to a sickly infant girl who tragically passed away within hours."
My breath hitched. "Wait... so Ryan is a biological Sterling?"
"No," Clara corrected solemnly, looking directly into Ryan's stunned eyes. "Elena’s husband, Victor, discovered that Elena had been having an affair with Julian's closest business rival years prior. Fearing Victor would cut her out of the will and expose her, Elena orchestrated the ultimate deception. She stole a child from the hospital nursery—a completely unrelated orphan boy whose parents had perished in a tragic accident—and swapped him with Julian’s newborn son to manipulate the family bloodline entirely."

The silence in the room was absolute. The air felt heavy, suffocating.
Ryan stared at Clara, his hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned white. "An orphan... I'm not a Sterling at all. Not even by blood."
