Chapter 3 - THE FILE OF LIESMy hands shook slightly as I pulled the thick manila folder from the open safe. Arthur lunged forward to grab it from me, but I spun away, stepping behind the heavy mahogany desk.

"Stay back, Arthur, or I swear I’ll call the police right now and let them explain why a corporate lawyer is breaking into a private family safe," I warned, locking eyes with him.
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, his chest heaving. He wiped his sweaty forehead with a handkerchief. "Katherine, listen to me. Some doors are better left shut. If you open that folder, you aren't just destroying Elena. You’re destroying Ryan. Everything he believes about his life—his wealth, his status, his very identity—will crumble."
"Good," I snapped, flipping the folder open. "He deserves to know after the way he treated me today."
The top document was a certified birth certificate, but the names printed on it made my breath hitch. It wasn't Ryan’s birth certificate. It was a birth record from a private clinic in Zurich, dated twenty-five years ago.
Child: Female. Deceased at birth. Mother: Elena Sterling.
I frowned, my eyes scanning down the page. "Wait... this says Elena had a daughter who died at birth. But Ryan is her son. Everyone knows Ryan is the sole heir to the Sterling empire."
"Keep reading," Arthur whispered, his voice defeated as he slumped into one of the leather armchairs by the desk.
I flipped to the next page. It was a legal adoption decree, but the details were redacted in thick black marker—except for one crucial paragraph near the bottom. It detailed a secret child swap executed by a private medical firm to protect a prominent corporate dynasty from a devastating scandal.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study flew open with a loud crash.
Ryan stood in the doorway, panting, his eyes wild and bloodshot. Behind him stood Elena, her face twisted in absolute terror, and Vanessa, who was now holding her deflated silicone belly in her hands like a dead animal.
"What is going on in here?" Ryan roared, his voice shaking the walls of the study. He saw the open safe, then looked at the papers clutched in my trembling hands. "What are you looking at?"
"Ryan, don't let her—" Elena shrieked, rushing forward, but Ryan raised a hand, stopping her in her tracks.
"Quiet, Mother," Ryan growled, his eyes locked onto mine. "Katherine. Give me those papers."

I looked down at the documents, then back up at the man who had ordered me out of my own home less than an hour ago. A bitter smile touched my lips.
"You might want to sit down for this, Ryan," I said softly, stepping out from behind the desk. "Your mother lied to you about a lot of things. Starting with who you actually are."
