Chapter 16 - THE NEW DAWNThree months later, the federal court cases concluded with sweeping, historic verdicts.

Julian Sterling and Damon Vance were sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for corporate espionage, extortion, and multi-million-dollar wire fraud. Elena, owing to her full cooperation and the submission of the hidden audio evidence, received a reduced ten-year sentence—a harsh reality, but one she accepted with quiet resignation.

Vanessa had attempted to flee the country, but federal agents apprehended her at the airport while she was trying to board a one-way flight to Rio de Janeiro with a suitcase full of stolen designer jewelry she had skimmed from the mansion. Her fake pregnancy scam became a viral internet sensation, permanently destroying her social media influencer career and leaving her facing charges of fraud and conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Ryan and I stood on the sun-drenched balcony of our new, modern penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago.

There were no sprawling, oppressive mansions with hidden safes or dark family secrets here—just floor-to-ceiling windows, warm hardwood floors, and a home filled with genuine love, transparency, and mutual respect.

Ryan stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" he whispered, kissing the side of my neck.

"I was just thinking about that rubber silicone belly hitting the marble floor three months ago," I laughed softly, turning around in his embrace to look up into his eyes. "If that fake belly hadn't dropped, you probably would have signed the divorce papers, kicked me out, and stayed trapped in your mother's toxic web forever."

Ryan smiled, a warm, genuine expression that reached all the way to his eyes. "Then that piece of rubber was the best thing that ever happened to me. It forced me to wake up, lose everything fake, and find the only thing that was ever truly real."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—the exact same ring box he had tried to give me in the boathouse during the siege. He dropped to one knee right there on the penthouse balcony, looking up at me with absolute devotion.

"We never got a proper wedding," Ryan said, his voice steady and full of emotion. "No grand ceremony, no joyful vows—just chaos, betrayal, and federal raids. So, Katherine... will you marry me again? Properly this time?"
