Chapter 14 - THE PRISON VISITThe maximum-security federal holding facility was cold, sterile, and smelled of industrial disinfectant. We sat across the reinforced glass partition in the bleak visitation booth, waiting in silence.

A heavy metal door banged open, and two guards escorted Elena Sterling into the room.
The proud, imperious matriarch who once ruled the Sterling mansion with an iron fist was completely gone. In her place sat a frail, broken old woman wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her face deeply lined with despair.
Elena picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands. Ryan slowly lifted his own receiver.
"Ryan..." Elena’s voice cracked through the small speaker, thick with unshed tears. "I didn't think you would come."
"Why shouldn't I?" Ryan’s voice was completely level, devoid of anger, which seemed to hurt her even more than rage would have. "You wanted to see me. You traded secrets for time. What do you want, Mother?"
Elena swallowed hard, her eyes darting nervously around the room before focusing entirely on her adopted son. "I know Clara came to see you. I know you found out about the switch... and the orphan."
"I know everything, Elena," Ryan replied coldly. "The lies, the theft, the cover-up. It's all out in the open."
Elena let out a ragged, desperate sob. "I did it because I was terrified, Ryan! When Victor threatened to divorce me and leave me penniless, I lost my mind. But you have to believe me... out of all the lies I ever told, loving you as my own son was never one of them. From the moment I held you in that hospital, I loved you more than my own life."
Ryan stared at her through the thick glass, watching the woman who had caused so much pain finally unravel completely.
"If you loved me, why did you try to destroy my marriage?" Ryan asked, his voice dropping to a quiet whisper. "Why did you bring Vanessa into our home to humiliate Katherine?"
"Because Julian threatened me!" Elena shrieked, her voice rising in panic as she pressed her palm against the glass. "Julian knew the truth about the baby switch for years! He was blackmailing me, forcing me to help him execute the corporate takeover, threatening to expose you and strip away everything you owned unless I broke up your marriage and brought Vanessa in as a puppet!"
My eyes widened. Julian wasn't just a victim of the past; he was a master manipulator who had trapped Elena in her own web of lies.

"Where is the proof of his blackmail, Elena?" I spoke up, leaning close to the intercom microphone. "If you want any chance of a reduced sentence, hand over the evidence."
Elena stared at me for a long moment, a bitter, self-mocking smile touching her lips. "Check the false bottom of the grandfather clock in the estate library. The audio recordings are all there. Julian's own voice condemning himself."
