Chapter 15 - THE GRANDFATHER CLOCKTwenty minutes later, Ryan and I stood inside the ransacked library of the Sterling mansion, accompanied by two federal marshals. The grand estate was quiet, sealed off as a federal crime scene, dust motes dancing in the beams of sunlight cutting through the tall windows.

We walked straight toward the towering antique grandfather clock in the corner of the room—the exact clock that had ticked away the seconds during the disastrous confrontation days ago.
Ryan dropped to his knees, opening the heavy wooden base of the clock. He felt along the inner wooden panel, his fingers searching for the hidden latch Elena had described.
Click.
A small concealed compartment popped open, revealing a hidden velvet pouch. Ryan pulled it out and unzipped it. Inside lay a small, high-end digital voice recorder and a stack of signed extortion letters from Julian Sterling dating back over a decade.
Ryan pressed play on the recorder.
Julian’s cold, arrogant voice echoed clearly through the quiet library:
“...Remember your place, Elena. If you don't help me manipulate the board into signing over the primary asset transfers, I’ll expose the baby swap to the federal press, and your precious little fake son will spend the rest of his life in prison for corporate fraud. You belong to me now.”
The marshals exchanged approving glances. One of them pulled out his radio. "Dispatch, this is Unit Four. We have secured primary audio evidence of extortion and conspiracy against Julian Sterling. Requesting immediate warrant expansion."
I let out a long breath, resting my hand on Ryan’s shoulder. "That's it. Julian's entire case is completely dismantled."
Ryan stood up slowly, pocketing the voice recorder. He looked around the vast, empty library where he had spent his entire childhood believing he was the undisputed king of the world. The illusion was entirely gone, but standing beside me, holding my hand, he looked lighter than I had ever seen him.

"Let's get out of here," Ryan said softly, wrapping his arm around my waist. "This place was never really a home anyway. Let's go build a real one."
As we walked out of the mansion doors for the final time, the autumn breeze felt crisp, clean, and entirely free.
