Chapter 11 - The Secret Foundation

The morning sun washed over the grand foyer of the Mercer estate, illuminating the marble floors that had once felt like a treacherous labyrinth of shadows. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, my vision sharp and unobstructed, watching the distant container ships glide across the gray waters of the Hudson River. For five years, my world had been confined to the tactile memory of eighty-two steps and the precise placement of a teacup. Now, every color, every sharp line of the moldings, and every dusting of sunlight felt like an intoxicating luxury.

Hannah approached quietly, carrying a stack of encrypted financial reports recovered from Daniel Cross’s primary office at Pier 17. Her footsteps were no longer hesitant; they carried the poise of a woman who had stepped out of the background and into the storm.

"The federal investigators finished downloading the primary hard drives from Cross’s offshore servers at midnight," Hannah said, handing me the top folder. "It’s worse than we thought, Grant. The conspiracy didn’t just involve local shipping logistics and medical malpractice."

I flipped open the folder, scanning the dense columns of corporate shell entities, Swiss bank routing numbers, and government-stamped permits. My eyes narrowed as a familiar emblem caught my attention—a stylized anchor intertwined with a serpent, the trademark logo of an international logistics conglomerate known as Apex Global.

"Apex," I murmured, the word tasting like dry steel on my tongue.

"They’ve been using Mercer Maritime’s shipping lanes to move restricted pharmaceutical components and illegal chemical precursors for nearly a decade," Hannah explained, her voice steady. "When you started poking into their supply chain expansion back at Pier 17, Hale and Cross didn't just want to neutralize your investigation—they needed your infrastructure, your fleet, and your clean federal safety ratings to run their operation unchecked."

I closed the folder with a sharp snap that echoed through the quiet study. "They thought a fabricated explosion and a chemical cage would permanently retire me. They forgot that a man who builds an empire from the docks doesn't lose his teeth just because the lights go out."

"What’s our next move?" Hannah asked, her gaze unwavering. "Hale is currently locked in federal detention, but his legal team is already filing motions for bail on medical grounds, claiming he requires specialized cardiac monitoring. And Cross hasn't uttered a single word to the prosecutors."

"Let Hale file his motions," I replied, a cold, calculating smile touching the corners of my mouth. "And let Cross stay silent. Silence is an admission of guilt when you’re standing in front of a firing squad of paper trails. Prepare the private jet. We’re flying to Zurich tonight."

"Zurich?" Hannah’s eyes widened slightly. "That’s where the primary accounts for the medical trust are held, but the Swiss banking secrecy laws—"

"Swiss banking laws protect illicit assets until you prove the account holders are dead or legally incapacitated," I interrupted, standing up to my full height. "And since Vernon Hale legally declared me permanently, irrevocably disabled five years ago, those accounts were technically established under fraudulent medical pretenses. We aren't going to ask the Swiss banks to open their vaults, Hannah. We’re going to walk in and legally repossess what they stole."
