Chapter 30 - Into the Eternal Light

Spring returned to the New York waterfront with a brilliant, golden warmth that made the glass towers of the Mercer Maritime headquarters gleam against the blue sky of the Hudson River.
On the west terrace of the mansion, the afternoon sun cast long, clean shadows across the stone patio. I sat at my mahogany table, a cup of coffee placed precisely four inches from the right edge of my plate—not out of blind routine, but as a quiet reminder of where I had been and where I stood now.
Hannah walked out onto the terrace, carrying a fresh stack of corporate restructuring reports, her smile radiant and effortless. Inside the house, I could hear the joyful laughter of Emma and little Lucy playing in the sunlit parlor, their bright voices echoing through the open French doors.
Caroline stepped out beside me, handing me a freshly printed shipping manifest for our newest fleet expansion across the Atlantic.
I took the paper, my eyes scanning the clear, sharp text without a single hesitation.
"Thinking about the future?" Caroline asked softly, leaning against the terrace railing beside me.

"No, Caroline," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "I’m not thinking about the future anymore. I’m living in the light."
