Chapter 29 - The Final Verdict
The federal courtroom in lower Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, federal agents, corporate executives, and onlookers crowded every bench, murmuring in hushed tones as the heavy oak doors at the front of the gallery swung open.
I walked into the courtroom side-by-side with Caroline, Hannah, and little Emma, our footsteps echoing steadily against the polished marble floor. We took our seats in the front row, our postures upright, calm, and unyielding.
Moments later, the bailiff’s sharp voice rang out: "All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Vance."
The judge entered, her black robes rustling as she took her seat at the high bench. Behind her, led in by federal marshals in orange jumpsuits and heavy steel shackles, came Dr. Vernon Hale and Daniel Cross.
Hale looked older, his hair graying rapidly, his posture slumped in total defeat. Cross stared straight ahead at the defense table, refusing to meet my eyes.
The trial had been swift, devastating, and absolute. The mountain of digital evidence, medical logs, financial ledgers, and eyewitness testimonies left no room for legal maneuvering.
"Dr. Vernon Hale," Judge Vance said, her voice cutting through the silent courtroom like a razor. "For the crimes of corporate conspiracy, systematic neurotoxin administration, kidnapping, and high-level fraud, this court sentences you to serve consecutive terms totaling ninety-nine years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
She turned her gaze toward Daniel Cross. "Daniel Cross, for treason against your corporate leadership, embezzlement, racketeering, and complicity in domestic terrorism, this court sentences you to eighty years in federal prison."
