Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Pier 17

The revelation detonated inside my mind with the force of the original blast. Five years ago, Pier 17 wasn't just a random industrial accident. I had been closing in on a massive maritime smuggling ring operating right out of the shipping yards—a syndicate deeply connected to pharmaceutical distribution and political kickbacks.

And Dr. Vernon Hale hadn't just been my family doctor. He had been the primary medical consultant for the shipping corporation's board of directors.

"Hannah," I said quietly, the darkness around me suddenly feeling less like a prison and more like a tactical advantage. "Who else was at the hospital the day I woke up?"

"According to your public medical records?" she asked. "Just Dr. Hale and your lieutenant, Daniel Cross."

Daniel Cross. My second-in-command. The man who took over my shipping empire while I sat rotting in a dark mansion, weeping for a dead wife and daughter whose bodies I had never actually been allowed to identify.

"Daniel told me Caroline and Emma were buried before I woke up," I whispered, the memory tasting like poison. "He said the identification was too gruesome. He said there was nothing left of them."

Hannah gasped, stepping back. "Grant... you don't think..."

"I think my entire life was engineered by a spreadsheet," I interrupted, my fists clenching so hard my knuckles turned white. "An explosion to wipe out my investigation, a fake permanent disability to strip away my power, and a loyal lieutenant installed to manage my assets while I sat trapped in the dark."

"What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice laced with genuine terror. "Hale has medical access, Cross has an army of armed security guards at the waterfront docks, and you're locked inside a mansion."

I turned my sightless face toward the door, a chilling smile cutting across my face.

"They think I’m helpless, Hannah. They think the blind man is waiting for his next dose of poison." I reached out and tapped the edge of my desk. "Let them keep thinking it. Tomorrow is Friday. Daniel Cross always comes by to review the estate ledgers. It’s time I invited my old lieutenant back into the light."
