Chapter 14 - The Ghost of Caroline

The red-eye flight back across the Atlantic felt like flying through an eternity of cold, silent vacuum. I sat in the private cabin of the jet, staring blankly at the decrypted financial printouts and the medical facility manifests.

Blackwood Biomedical Research Center.

Located deep in the densely wooded hills of upstate New York, officially licensed for advanced neurological and psychological trauma recovery, and funded entirely by the offshore accounts Hale and Cross had milked from my maritime empire.

When the jet touched down at JFK International Airport under the harsh glare of dawn, an armored convoy of private security vehicles was already waiting on the tarmac. Hannah stepped off the ramp beside me, her coat buttoned tightly against the biting autumn wind.

"Are you ready for this, Grant?" she asked, her voice laced with deep, genuine concern. "If she’s alive... if Caroline survived the explosion—"

"Then someone orchestrated the greatest psychological torture in maritime history," I interrupted, stepping into the back of the armored SUV. "Let’s go find out why my wife let me rot in the dark for five years."

The convoy raced northward, leaving the roaring chaos of the New York waterfront behind and plunging into the winding, tree-lined highways of upstate New York. Two hours later, the heavy iron security gates of the Blackwood Biomedical Research Center loomed out of the morning fog.

The gates swung open automatically as our security lead flashed our high-clearance federal override codes—codes forcibly extracted from the digital terminals in Zurich.

The facility was an ultra-modern fortress of glass, steel, and clinical white stone, surrounded by towering chain-link fences and private security patrols. We pulled up directly to the main entrance, the tires crunching softly on the pristine gravel drive.

I stepped out of the vehicle, my eyes fixed on the monolithic glass doors. Every instinct from my years ruling the waterfront surged back into my veins—calm, lethal, and utterly uncompromising.

"Secure the perimeter," I ordered my men. "Nobody goes in, and nobody leaves."

Hannah and I walked through the double sliding glass doors into a vast, sterile lobby smelling of antiseptic and polished tile. A terrified receptionist at the front desk slammed her laptop shut as we approached.

"Sir, this is a private, restricted research facility—you cannot simply—"

"Where is Dr. Caroline Mercer?" I asked, my voice dropping into a quiet, terrifying register that froze her in her tracks.

The receptionist swallowed hard, trembling. "Dr... Dr. Mercer is in the executive surgical wing on the fourth floor. Sector Nine."

I didn't wait for her to finish. I turned toward the private elevators, swiped the master override keycard Hannah had copied from Hale's secure files, and pressed the button for the fourth floor.
