Chapter 13 - Shadows in the Alpine Night

By evening, the financial storm had broken in our favor. The Zurich Banking Plaza had capitulated completely, handing over full administrative control of the multi-million-dollar trust and unlocking the encrypted digital ledgers that connected Apex Global directly to the upper echelons of the New York shipping syndicates.

We retired to a private, high-security suite on the top floor of the Dolder Grand hotel, overlooking the glittering lights of Zurich nestled against the dark silhouette of the mountains.

Hannah stood by the balcony doors, watching the distant city lights with a quiet, contemplative expression. I poured two glasses of aged single-malt scotch, walking over and handing one to her.

"You haven't mentioned Caroline or Emma since we left New York," Hannah said softly, her fingers tracing the rim of the crystal glass.

I took a slow sip, the amber liquid burning my throat with a comforting warmth. "Because for five years, their memory was weaponized against me, Hannah. Every time I closed my eyes in the dark, Hale and Cross made sure I felt like I was standing over their graves. But out here—seeing the light, reclaiming the truth—I realize something else."

"What’s that?" she asked, turning her head to look at me.

"The explosion at Pier 17 didn't just target my business empire," I said, my voice dropping into a hard, cold register. "The official police reports claimed my wife and daughter were vaporized in the blast office. But when I cross-referenced the passenger manifests of the private medical evacuation flights leaving New York on the night of the explosion..."

I paused, watching the realization dawn in Hannah’s eyes.

"You don't think they died in the blast?" she breathed, stepping closer.

"I think the explosion was a cover story," I said, my grip tightening around my glass. "A convenient way to eliminate witnesses, seize my assets, and lock me away in a dark mansion while Caroline and Emma were quietly relocated under new identities to ensure I never came looking for them."

Before Hannah could answer, the secure satellite phone resting on the mahogany coffee table buzzed sharply.

I crossed the room in two strides and flipped it open.

"Report," I commanded.

"Boss," came the gruff voice of my head of security back in New York. "We just intercepted an encrypted transmission originating from a secure terminal inside the federal holding facility where Dr. Hale is being held."

"Go on."

"Hale isn't waiting for bail, Mr. Mercer. Someone just smuggled a specialized micro-transmitter into his cell. He’s communicating directly with Apex Global's chief executive."

"Who is the CEO?" I asked, a sudden, chilling premonition gripping my chest.

"According to the decrypted metadata, the wire transfers from the Swiss trust weren't going to a corporate board," security reported grimly. "They were being funneled directly to a private medical research facility in upstate New York—a facility operating under the personal direction of a woman who supposedly died in an explosion at Pier 17 five years ago."

The phone slipped slightly in my hand. The room around me seemed to spin, the glittering lights of Zurich fading into a suffocating, endless black.
