Chapter 9 - The Return of the Boss

Three days later, the oak double doors of the Mercer Maritime Boardroom swung open.
Twenty senior executives, corporate board members, and shipping magnates sat around the massive mahogany conference table in absolute, stunned silence. For five years, they had operated under Daniel Cross’s corrupt regime, believing the old lion was dead and buried in the dark.
Then I walked in.
I wore my old tailored black wool coat, my stride completely steady, my eyes sharp, clear, and unyielding. No cane. No hesitation. No darkness.
I walked straight to the head of the table, resting both hands flat on the polished wood.
The color drained entirely from the face of the acting CEO—a man Daniel had installed to launder the syndicate's profits.
"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls overlooking the New York harbor. "I trust business has been profitable in my absence."
No one breathed. No one moved. The silence was absolute.
"Effective immediately," I continued, my gaze sweeping across every terrified face in the room, "every contract, every subsidiary, and every offshore account established over the last five years is frozen pending a full federal audit."
