Chapter 19 - The Collapse of Apex Global

Two weeks after the raid on the Blackwood facility, the corporate headquarters of Apex Global in Manhattan looked like a morgue. Federal marshals, accompanied by my private legal and security teams, marched through the polished glass lobbies, seizing servers, freezing assets, and hauling away top-tier executives in handcuffs.

Dr. Vernon Hale was denied bail permanently, facing a federal indictment that carried multiple consecutive life sentences for corporate conspiracy, kidnapping, and chemical assault. Daniel Cross’s maritime syndicates were dismantled piece by piece, absorbed entirely back into Mercer Maritime under my direct, unyielding oversight.

I stood on the west terrace of my mansion once again, the salt air of the New York waterfront carrying the sharp, clean bite of a new beginning.

Behind me, the sliding glass door clicked open.

Soft, rapid footsteps padded across the hardwood floor, followed by an excited, familiar voice.

"Mr. Grant! Look what I found!"

I turned around with a warm smile. Little Lucy Reed stood on the terrace, holding her yellow plastic flashlight aloft like a beacon of triumph, while her mother Hannah walked a few paces behind, carrying a tray of fresh coffee and tea.

"Let me see, Lucy," I said, dropping down to one knee.

Lucy clicked the flashlight on, shining the bright beam directly toward my face.

I didn't blink. I didn't turn away. My pupils contracted sharply in the brilliant light, clear and steady.

"They got smaller again!" Lucy squealed with delight.

May you like

Hannah laughed softly, placing the tray on the side table and walking over to stand beside me. "Some habits die hard, don't they?"

"Not habits," I replied, standing up and looking out past the terrace toward the busy shipping lanes of Pier 17, where container ships moved smoothly across the sunlit water, flying the Mercer flag high and proud. "Certainties."
