Chapter 28 - Return to New York

Forty-eight hours later, our private jet touched down at JFK International Airport under the crisp, clear morning light of early winter. The transition from the violent swells of the Pacific to the familiar, bustling concrete of the New York waterfront felt like crossing the threshold from war back into an empire waiting to be shaped.
Caroline and Emma met us in the private hangar, their faces a mixture of lingering anxiety and overwhelming relief. When I stepped off the aircraft ramp, nine-year-old Emma ran straight toward me, throwing her arms around my waist.
I scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her dark curly hair, feeling the fierce, unbreakable warmth of fatherhood that no explosion, no prison, and no syndicate could ever take away from me again.
Caroline walked up beside us, resting her hand gently on my shoulder. Her eyes were bright, clear, and steady.
"The federal prosecutors just called," Caroline said softly, a triumphant smile touching her lips. "With the digital drives we recovered from Pier 42 and Viktor Kane’s testimony on the Vanguard, the U.S. Attorney General has officially issued international arrest warrants for the remaining members of the Apex Global board of directors."
"And Daniel Cross?" I asked, setting Emma down gently and holding Caroline's hand.
"Cross cracked this morning," she replied. "Realizing that Kane and the board abandoned him to take the full fall for the Pier 17 conspiracy, he gave the prosecutors everything—bank accounts, safehouse locations, and the names of every corrupt official on the payroll."

I looked out across the tarmac toward the distant, glittering skyline of Manhattan. The dark days of isolation, blindness, and manufactured helplessness were finally, irrevocably dead and buried.
"Let’s go home," I said quietly.
