Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND WHO CRIED WOLF | "I Crashed My Own Funeral Gala and Saw My Replacement."

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and flowing champagne. Banners hung from the gilded balconies, featuring the sleek blue logo of Vance Pharmaceuticals and the text: A NEW DAWN IN NEUROLOGICAL FREEDOM.
Clara stood in the upper balcony shadow, draped in a floor-length emerald dress Julian had secured for her. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, her crescent scar concealed beneath high-coverage foundation. Down on the main floor, hundreds of Chicago’s elite cheered as a tall, devastatingly handsome man in his late thirties took the stage.
Arthur Vance.
Seeing his face didn't trigger a flood of romantic nostalgia; it triggered a visceral wave of nausea. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird as Arthur stepped up to the microphone, putting on an expression of profound, tragic gravity.
"Three years ago today," Arthur began, his rich baritone echoing softly through the crystal chandeliers, "I lost my beloved wife, Clara, to a tragic accident in the icy waters of the Chicago River. I thought my life was over. But tonight, in her honor, Vance BioTech delivers the ultimate gift to humanity: the total eradication of human suffering through Project Lethe."
The crowd applauded wildly. Clara squeezed the marble railing until her knuckles turned white.
"And tonight," Arthur continued, smiling warmly down at the front row, "I am humbled to announce that I do not walk this path alone. Please welcome the co-founder of our new era... my wife, Clara Vance."
Clara gasped, dropping back into the shadows.
From the front row, a woman stepped onto the stage. She wore a sparkling white dress, walked with effortless grace, and turned to smile at the flashbulbs.
It was Clara.
The face, the height, the voice, the smile—it was an absolute, flawless replica of Clara Vance. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, believing they were witnessing a miracle—a woman who had survived her tragic disappearance and returned to her loving husband's side.
Standing in the dark, Clara touched her own face, feeling the cold sweat on her skin. "Julian..." she whispered into her hidden comms earpiece. "Who is that woman on stage?"
Julian’s voice came back through the earpiece, trembling with rare, genuine shock. "Clara... abort the mission right now. Get out of the building!"
"Who is she, Julian?!"

"She isn't a double, Clara," Julian whispered, his breath ragged. "I just ran the facial recognition biometrics through the server... That woman on stage is the real Clara Vance. Her DNA match is 100%."
Clara felt the floor beneath her sway. "If she is Clara Vance... then who the hell am I?"
