Chapter 5 - THE DOPPELGÄNGER’S GAMBIT | "She Has My Name, My Face, and My Life... But I Have Her Secrets."

The marble restroom on the third floor of the Drake Hotel was quiet, except for the rhythmic dripping of a brass faucet.

Clara stood behind the heavy oak door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She had trailed the woman in white away from the gala, waiting for the precise moment her security detail stepped away to secure the VIP corridor.

The door pushed open. The woman in the white dress walked in, adjusting her diamond necklace in the mirror. She looked immaculate, radiant, and utterly untouched by the terror that had consumed Clara’s life for the past forty-eight hours.

Clara stepped out of the shadow, holding the suppressed pistol she had lifted from Julian's stash, pointing it directly at the back of the woman’s head.

"Don't move," Clara commanded, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly steady growl. "Don't scream. Don't touch the panic button on your wrist."

The woman frozen in the mirror didn't scream. She didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, terrifying smile spread across her red lips. She turned around slowly, looking down the barrel of the gun with an expression of intense, motherly pity.

"Hello, Subject Seven," the woman said softly. Her voice was an exact sonic match to Clara’s own.

Clara’s hand trembled slightly. "Subject... Seven?"

"Did Arthur really let you believe you were the original?" The woman chuckled, leaning casually against the marble sink. "Oh, darling. Clara Vance didn't die three years ago. Clara Vance is standing right here. I am the genius behind Vance BioTech. I designed Project Lethe. And you... you are merely the seventh synthetic vessel we built to test the stability of long-term neural integration."

"You're lying!" Clara hissed, stepping closer, bringing the barrel inches from the woman's forehead. "I have memories! I have a childhood! I remember breaking my arm when I was eight years old falling out of an oak tree in Ohio!"

"A standardized memory package, code-named Ohio Summer," the real Clara Vance replied coldly, reaching out with one manicured finger to gently tip the barrel of the gun away from her face. "It’s a lovely story, isn't it? Very grounded. Very human. It keeps the synthetic tissue from rejecting the neural network. But tell me, Subject Seven... why do you think you ended up on that train today?"

Clara’s mind raced. "The stranger... Julian..."

"Julian didn't save you three years ago," Clara Vance whispered, stepping leaning in close, her breath warm against Clara's ear. "Julian is our Chief Testing Officer. You aren't running away from an assassination, Seven. You're currently undergoing Phase Four of the stress simulation. We needed to see if a synthetic mind could survive a extreme survival trigger before we deploy ten thousand of you into the federal government."

The walls of the restroom seemed to tilt. Clara backed away, her chest heaving, her world fracturing into a nightmare of endless mirrors.

"Look at your left wrist," the real Clara Vance said softly. "Underneath the skin. Touch it."

Clara brought her trembling hand to her left wrist. Beneath her skin, just above the radial artery, she felt it: a small, hard, rectangular object the size of a grain of rice, humming with a microscopic, electrical pulse.
