Chapter 12 - THE SHADOW IN THE WINDOW | "A Stranger Dropped a Black Envelope in My Lap... and the Photo Inside Proved My Life Is Still a Lie."

Rain lashed against the windows of the speeding stolen sedan as Julian slammed his foot onto the accelerator, weaving through Seattle's midnight traffic. Beside him, Sarah—or Clara—stared at her left wrist. The blue light beneath her skin was pulsing faster now, humming with a vibration that vibrated straight through her bones.
"Who are they?" she demanded, her voice shaking despite the strange, unnatural calm settling over her muscles. "Arthur Vance is dead! I saw the news reports!"
"Arthur was a middle manager with an ego," Julian spat, throwing the sedan into a hard left turn as gunfire rattled against the rear armor plate. "He thought he was a king because he managed the laboratory. But the money, the infrastructure, the satellite networks—that came from The Olympus Group."
Julian tossed a heavy, black wax-sealed envelope into her lap.
"Open it," he ordered.
Clara tore open the seal with trembling fingers. Inside was a series of high-resolution satellite photographs. The first showed her standing in the Seattle bookstore three days ago. The second showed her sleeping in her apartment. But the third photograph made the air freeze in her lungs.
It was a medical schematic of a human brain, suspended in a liquid-filled sphere labeled: SPECIMEN 00: ORIGINAL MENTAL MATRIX.
"What is this?" Clara whispered.
"Arthur lied to you in the tower," Julian said grimly. "He told you that you were Subject Seven, a clone of a dead woman who died of brain cancer. He told you that you were the monster who designed the system."
"Was he lying?"
"He was half-lying," Julian replied, his voice dropping into a dark register. "The real Clara Vance didn't die of glioblastoma three years ago. The Olympus Group captured her. They placed her physical body into a cryogenic stasis unit in Zurich, using her live brain as a central processing unit to drive their global surveillance network. Every clone they built—Subject One through Seven—was just an remote interface probe."
Clara stared at the photograph. "So the real me... is still alive? She's being used as a computer?"

"She's not just a computer," Julian said, looking into the rearview mirror as a convoy of black suburban utility vehicles boxed them in on the interstate bridge. "She’s awake. And she just hijacked the global satellite grid to send a message to the only vessel left."
Julian’s tablet on the dashboard suddenly flashed to life. A single line of text burned through the static: CONTAINMENT BREACH IN ZURICH. SUBJECT SEVEN, COME HOME AND KILL ME.
