Chapter 3 - THE GHOST OF VANCE BIOTECH | "I Visited My Own Grave and Found Something Worse Than a Body."

The safehouse was a subterranean bunker beneath an abandoned meatpacking factory on Chicago's South Side. The air smelled of mildew and rust, illuminated only by the flicker of four computer monitors displaying blue-line code and encrypted satellite feeds.

Clara sat on the edge of a steel gurney while Julian stitched a deep gash on her shoulder. Every time the needle pierced her skin, memories flashed behind her eyes—not of her cozy apartment or her favorite coffee shop, but of sterile white laboratories, glowing glass vials, and a silver ring emblazoned with an eagle swallowing a snake.

"If I was dead, why come after me now?" Clara asked, staring at the digital monitors. "Why break three years of silence?"

"Because of Project Lethe," Julian said, tying off the suture with surgical precision. "Three years ago, Vance BioTech developed a neural-remapping protocol capable of selectively wiping traumatic memories and replacing them with entirely synthetic lives. It was meant to treat military veterans with severe PTSD. But your husband, Arthur Vance, realized its true potential: political control, deep-cover espionage, and total corporate erasure."

Julian pressed a button on the keyboard. A glowing dossier appeared on the screen.

"You discovered Arthur was secretly selling Project Lethe to international crime syndicates," Julian continued. "You tried to blow the whistle. When Arthur found out, he ordered you erased. But you knew the master encryption key to Project Lethe was stored inside your own neural architecture. If he killed your brain, he lost access to the trillion-dollar technology. So he hired me to wipe your mind and put you under surveillance until his team could figure out how to extract the key without destroying the code."

"And now?" Clara asked, her throat tight.

"Now, Arthur’s engineers have solved the extraction problem," Julian said grimly. "They don't need you alive anymore. They just need your brain in a glass tank."

Clara stood up, walking toward a steel desk in the corner. On top of it lay a stack of fake identification cards, bank statements, and a framed photograph of a funeral service at Graceland Cemetery dated October 14th, 2023.

"I want to see it," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register that was cold, commanding, and utterly alien to the woman who had spent three years apologizing to people who bumped into her on the subway.

"See what?"

"My grave," Clara said, looking Julian dead in the eye. "If Arthur buried something in that casket to trick the world, I need to know what's down there. Because if my past is going to hunt me down, I’m going to dig it up first."
