Chapter 9 - THE FINAL DECEPTION | "The Truth Isn't a Secret... It's a Weapon."

Arthur’s face turned deathly pale, but then, slowly, a low, hysterical laugh began to rumble in his chest. He stood up, resting his hands flat on his desk, leaning toward Clara with a look of twisted triumph.

"You really think you solved the puzzle, don't you, Seven?" Arthur sneered, his eyes manic. "You think you’re the brilliant, tragic heroine who uncovered the corporate conspiracy!"

"I know what I am," Clara said cold, raising the silver drive. "I have the full logs. I have the video evidence of my creation. I am going to broadcast this file to every major news network on the planet in three, two—"

"Go ahead! Broadcast it!" Arthur roared, throwing his arms wide open. "Broadcast it to the world! Tell them that Clara Vance created Project Lethe! Tell them that you were the one who ordered the human trials! Tell them that you sacrificed fifty innocent people in illegal underground labs to perfect the technology!"

Clara’s finger froze over the execution button on the drive. "What did you say?"

"You blame me?" Arthur whispered, walking around the desk until he was standing right over her. "I was just the businessman, Clara! I managed the money! You were the monster! You designed the memory-wipe protocol because you couldn't sleep at night with the guilt of what you did to those test subjects! You built the synthetic bodies! You built the memory-wiping procedure! You wiped your own mind three years ago because you couldn't bear to look at your own reflection!"

Clara felt a cold sensation bloom in her chest. Deep within her locked neural pathways, a door swung open.

A memory—a real, unfiltered, horrific memory—flooded into her mind:

She saw herself in a white lab coat, standing over a screaming test subject, coldly adjusting a dial while watching a monitor display a human mind being erased. She saw herself signing the execution orders for rogue scientists. She saw herself turning to Arthur three years ago and saying: "If the government finds out, wipe me. Create a simple life for me in Chicago. Let me be innocent... even if it's a lie."

The gun in Clara’s hand felt impossibly heavy.

"Julian didn't betray you," Arthur laughed, tears of dark amusement in his eyes. "Julian was following your orders! You hired him to protect you from yourself! You engineered the train, the hitmen, the obituary—all of it! It was a self-triggering subroutine you designed three years ago to activate in case you ever felt the urge to remember who you really were!"

Clara stared at her hands—the hands of a murderer, the hands of an architect of horror.

"I... I built the nightmare," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"Yes, my love," Arthur said softly, reaching out to gently touch her chin. "You built it all. And now, the simulation is complete. You came back to me, just like you programmed yourself to do."
