Chapter 2 - MEMORY IN THE BLOOD | "My Hands Remember How to Kill, But My Mind Doesn't Know Why."

The ground hit Clara like a runaway freight train. She tumbled down a steep gravel embankment, the sharp stones tearing through her coat and scraping her palms raw before she finally slid to a halt in the knee-deep mud of an abandoned railyard. Rain began to pour down in violent, icy sheets, washing away the smell of diesel and replacing it with the copper tang of blood.
"Get up!" Julian commanded, hauling her to her feet by her collar. His face was smeared with soot and blood, but his eyes remained unnaturally calm. "They saw us jump. We have six minutes before their drones triangulate our position."
"I can't!" Clara sobbed, clutching her bruised ribs. "I'm an analyst! I sit at a desk twelve hours a day! I don't run!"
"You aren't an analyst, Clara!" Julian barked, shaking her until her teeth rattled. "Apex Logistics doesn't exist. Your boss is an automated voice server running on a server rack in Idaho. Your entire life was a gilded cage designed to keep your mind quiet so you wouldn't remember what you built before you disappeared!"
Suddenly, the blinding beam of a spotlight cut through the darkness from the top of the embankment. The whine of a high-tech surveillance drone filled the air, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on gravel. A shadowy figure emerged at the crest of the hill, raising a silenced carbine rifle directly at Julian’s chest.
"Target sighted," a harsh voice barked over a radio comm. "Eliminate the mark."
Fear didn't paralyze Clara this time; something far darker took over. As the gunman squeezed the trigger, a surge of pure, electric adrenaline bypassed Clara’s conscious mind entirely. Her body moved on instinct she had never possessed.
Before Julian could draw his own weapon, Clara lunged forward. She swept the gunman's lead leg with a brutal, low-kick, disarming him with a precise, two-finger strike to his radial nerve. The rifle clattered to the mud. In a single fluid movement, she spun behind the sprawling attacker, snapped his forearm back until the elbow joint popped with a sickening crunch, and drew his sidearm from his tactical vest, chambering a round and bringing the muzzle directly to his temple—all in less than three seconds.
The railyard fell dead silent, save for the patter of rain and Clara’s ragged breathing.
Clara stared down at the groaning man beneath her, then at the heavy black handgun locked effortlessly in her grip. Her hands weren't shaking. Her grip was flawless.

"How... how did I just do that?" she whispered, horror choking her voice as she looked at Julian.
Julian wiped a mixture of rain and blood from his mouth, a grim, humorless smile touching his lips. "Because three years ago, before you became a peaceful little ghost, you were the head of tactical research for Vance BioTech. You didn't just design weapons systems, Clara. You were the weapon."
