Chapter 1 - The Frame Shatters

The silence hanging over the garden was heavy enough to crush bone. The security guard, his hands trembling, stepped forward and handed the sleek black tablet to Adrian. Vivian made a sudden, frantic lunging motion toward the device, her manicured nails reaching out like talons, but Adrian pivoted instantly, throwing his shoulder in her way.
"Adrian, don't look at it!" Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking into a jagged, desperate pitch that bore no resemblance to her usual smooth charm. "She tampered with it! Grace works with the IT staff, she set this up!"
Adrian ignored her. His thumb tapped the screen. The high-definition video loaded immediately, crisp and undeniable under the glaring afternoon sun.
On the screen, the pool area appeared empty. Then, Vivian walked into the frame pushing Leo’s silver stroller. She paused right at the stone edge. She didn't look frantic. She didn't look like a motherly figure out for a casual stroll. She glanced over her shoulder toward the mansion doors, checked her watch, and carefully disengaged the stroller’s wheel lock. With a single, deliberate shove of her hand, she pushed the stroller forward.
The video captured her face in agonizing clarity. As the stroller tipped and crashed into the deep end, a cold, triumphant smile spread across Vivian’s lips. She folded her hands in front of her white silk dress, standing perfectly still, watching the water splash, waiting.
Then the camera captured Grace bursting into the frame, dropping the laundry basket, diving without a moment's hesitation onto the wet stone, and tearing the infant from the sinking stroller. Only when Grace pulled Leo out did Vivian open her mouth, assume a posture of terror, and begin her theatrical screaming.
The tablet slipped slightly in Adrian’s hand. The blood drained so completely from his face that he looked like a ghost. Slowly, he turned his head toward Vivian. The fury in his eyes was no longer human; it was terrifying, primordial, and absolute.
"You..." Adrian’s voice was a low, guttural growl that chilled the summer air.
Vivian backed away, her heel catching on the edge of a lounge chair. Her polished facade cracked into pieces. "Adrian, listen to me—it isn't what it looks like! I was just trying to test her! I wanted to see if she was paying attention!"
"You threw my six-month-old son into six feet of water!" Adrian roared, the sound echoing off the stone walls of the estate.
He took a step toward her, but Vivian didn't apologize. Seeing that her act was completely ruined, her pathetic expression dissolved in an instant. Her eyes went flat, cold, and venomous.

"Touch me and I’ll have my lawyers destroy you before nightfall," she spat, her tone suddenly stripped of all warmth. "You think you're untouchable, Adrian? You have no idea what you've just started."
Before Adrian could reach her, Vivian whipped around, threw off her designer heels, and sprinted toward the side gate of the estate, her white dress fluttering behind her like a shroud.
