Chapter 11 - The Dead Man's Warning

The quiet safety of the Harrington estate lasted less than twenty-four hours.
Grace sat in the sunlit conservatory, watching six-month-old Leo play on a velvet blanket. Beside her, Adrian was reviewing restructuring documents for Harrington Enterprises, his face softer than it had been in months. For the first time since Evelyn’s death, the house felt like a home instead of a gilded prison.
Then the front gates chimed.
A private courier in an unmarked black suit delivered a heavy, wax-sealed mahogany box directly to Adrian. No return address. No postage. Just Adrian’s full name written in stark, jagged calligraphy.
Adrian cut the seal with a silver letter opener. Inside lay a single item: Julian’s personal encrypted cell phone.
Before Adrian could touch it, the screen lit up on its own. A video file began playing automatically.
It showed a dark, sterile prison cell. Julian sat on the edge of a narrow metal cot, his hands shaking uncontrollably, his skin a ghastly shade of gray. His eyes were wide with a terror that went far deeper than his arrest at the press conference.
"If you are watching this, Adrian... I’m already dead," Julian’s recorded voice whispered, hoarse and trembling. "They gave me the poison in my drinking water ten minutes after the transport arrived. Vivian and I... we were just front row puppets. We thought we were taking over the company for ourselves."
Julian leaned closer to the camera, tears of pure horror spilling down his hollow cheeks.
"We didn't kill Evelyn because of money, Adrian! We were ordered to! Evelyn found out who really controls the Harrington bloodline trust! It isn't the board. It isn't the family. It’s the Apex Syndicate—and their leader is someone you’ve mourned for five years. Run, Adrian. Take the baby and—"
The video abruptly cut to static.
At that exact second, Adrian’s personal phone buzzed with a emergency news alert: "BREAKING: Julian Harrington Found Dead in High-Security Cell from Apparent Chemical Poisoning."

Grace stood up instantly, pulling Leo into her arms, her heart hammering against her ribs. "He was silenced before he could talk."
Adrian stared at the dead screen, his knuckles white. "Julian said the leader is someone I've mourned for five years." He looked up at Grace, his eyes filled with a terrifying realization. "Grace... five years ago, my mother's plane crashed over the Atlantic. Her body was never recovered."
