Chapter 8 - The Shadow Takeover

The next morning, the headlines across every major newspaper and news network carried the same breaking story:

"BILLIONAIRE ADRIAN HARRINGTON ON THE RUN AFTER ATTEMPTED INFANTICIDE; FIANCÉE VIVIAN CROSS ASSUMES CONTROL OF HARRINGTON ENTERPRISES."

At the Harrington Corporate Tower downtown, a massive press conference was underway. Hundreds of reporters packed the main auditorium. Cameras flashed endlessly as Julian Harrington, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, took the podium. Beside him sat Vivian, wearing a black mourning dress, a delicate black veil covering her face, dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Julian announced into the microphones, his voice dripping with orchestrated grief. "It is with a heavy heart that I announce the temporary suspension of my cousin, Adrian Harrington, from all corporate duties. In light of the horrifying events yesterday at his estate—where he and a compromised staff member put young Leo’s life in grave danger—the board of directors has voted unanimously."

Julian paused, looking dramatically into the main broadcast camera.

"I will be stepping in as acting CEO of Harrington Enterprises, with Miss Vivian Cross serving as trustee of the family estate until this tragedy is resolved by law enforcement. We urge Adrian to turn himself in peacefully."

The room erupted into frantic questions. Journalists shouted over one another, flashes blinding the stage.

Vivian leaned into the microphone, her voice trembling with perfected anguish. "All I want... is for justice for little Leo. Grace Miller and Adrian are dangerous. If anyone sees them, please... call the authorities."

Behind the stage, high above the auditorium in the AV control booth, two figures dressed in black technical uniforms stood silently in the dark.

Grace adjusted her headset and looked down through the glass window at Vivian and Julian. Beside her, Adrian checked the digital sync cable connected to the building's master broadcast transmitter.

"Is the feed locked?" Adrian asked softly.

Grace looked down at her watch. "The network feed is locked to every national news channel in the country. They're broadcasting live to forty million people right now."

"Then let's give them a real show," Adrian said.
