Chapter 12 - The Vault of Swans

Under the cover of midnight, a heavy downpour washed over the Harrington family mausoleum at the far edge of the estate. Rain slammed against the cold marble angels guarding the iron doors.

Grace held a tactical flashlight while Adrian unlocked the heavy brass lock on the ancestral tomb.

"Julian’s phone contained a single GPS coordinate," Grace whispered, her eyes scanning the dark tree line behind them. "It pointed directly to your mother's crypt."

They stepped inside. The air was thick with the scent of old stone, damp earth, and decaying lilies. Grace kept one hand near the concealed holster beneath her leather jacket—her old military reflexes fully awakened.

Adrian approached the towering marble sarcophagus bearing the name Victoria Harrington. He pressed his hand against the carved coat of arms on the side.

A heavy mechanical click echoed through the silent vault.

The stone coffin slid back on hidden hydraulic rails, revealing a illuminated spiral staircase winding deep into the bedrock beneath the mausoleum.

"A subterranean bunker," Grace murmured, stepping onto the metal stairs first. "Your mother didn't die in a plane crash, Adrian. She built a fortress under your home."

At the bottom of the stairs lay a high-tech surveillance command center. Dozens of monitors lined the walls, playing live feeds from inside the Harrington mansion, the boardrooms of global banks, and high-security government offices.

In the center of the room sat an antique oak desk. Resting on top of it was a glass vial filled with a dark violet liquid—the aconitine poison—and a fresh handwritten letter addressed to Grace.

Grace stepped forward and picked up the note.

'My dear Grace,' the elegant handwriting read. 'You played your part brilliantly. You exposed my sloppy puppets, Vivian and Julian. But you made one fatal mistake. You brought my grandson right back to where he belongs. Welcome to the family.'

A sharp hiss echoed through the chamber. The heavy steel door behind them slammed shut, locking them inside.
