Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The emergency room doors slammed open as Adrian stormed in carrying his unresponsive son, flanked by Grace. Within seconds, a team of pediatric trauma doctors rushed them into a bay.

"Systemic respiratory distress!" the lead doctor shouted as monitors began to blare. "Get a toxicology screen immediately! Put him on high-flow oxygen!"

Adrian stood against the wall, paralyzed, as nurses cut away Leo's clothes. Grace stood right beside him, her wet hand gripping the edge of the metal cart.

Twenty minutes stretched into an eternity of agonized waiting. The steady, mechanical beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping Adrian grounded in reality. Finally, the chief of toxicology stepped out from behind the curtain, holding a digital chart, his expression grim.

"Mr. Harrington," the doctor said softly. "We managed to stabilize your son, but we found something concerning in his blood. A synthetic neurotoxin—specifically a modified derivative of aconitine."

Adrian frowned, rubbing his forehead. "Aconitine? Is that... poison?"

"It's a deadly plant toxin that causes heart failure and rapid paralysis," the doctor explained. "It's extremely rare. In fact... I have only seen this chemical marker once before in my entire career."

Grace felt Adrian’s body go completely rigid beside her.

"Where?" Adrian asked, his voice barely a breath. "Where did you see it before?"

The doctor looked hesitant, checking his tablet. "Eight months ago. Right here in this hospital. On the post-mortem toxicology report for your late wife, Evelyn Harrington."

The room seemed to lose all air. Adrian stumbled back against the wall, his eyes wide with unadulterated horror.

When Evelyn had died eight months ago, the official cause of death had been listed as sudden cardiac arrest caused by an undetected genetic defect. Adrian had spent months drowning in grief, believing his wife's heart had simply failed her.

"Evelyn didn't have a heart condition," Adrian whispered, the terrifying truth unfurling in his mind like a nightmare. "She was murdered. The same way Vivian just tried to kill Leo."

Grace looked at Adrian, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Vivian wasn't just trying to get rid of me today, Mr. Harrington. She was finishing what she started months ago."

Before Adrian could process the revelation, the heavy double doors of the emergency room were pushed open. Four armed police officers strode into the hallway, led by a tall detective in a trench coat.

The detective drew his badge, his eyes cold as he locked onto Adrian.

"Adrian Harrington?" the detective called out. "Put your hands where we can see them. You're under arrest."
