Chapter 13 - THE GHOST IN THE FOUNDATIONThe words hit me like a physical blow. I stumbled backward, my hand flying to my mouth to stifle a gasp.

Arthur Morgan. The architect of the family's sins. The man whose dark legacy Adrian had spent years trying to dismantle and redeem.
Adrian didn't flinch, but his face hardened into an expression of absolute, terrifying wrath. The gun in his hand steadied, the laser sight painting a bright red dot directly between Marcus Vance’s eyes.
"You're lying," Adrian said, his voice a low, freezing growl. "My father’s records from that period were fully audited. There was no missing person under that name."
"Of course there wasn't!" Marcus mocked, taking another step forward, seemingly unbothered by the fact that he was staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. "When you control the police, the coroner, and the municipal records, you can make a man vanish into thin air. David tried to expose the toxic runoff in the Shadows. He was locked in one of the subterranean holding cells before the facility was sealed."
Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, yellowed plastic ID badge, tossing it onto the concrete floor between us.
It skidded across the dust and stopped at my feet.
I looked down. Through the cracked plastic, a young man’s face stared back at me. Dark hair, kind eyes, wearing a lab technician’s uniform.
David.
My knees buckled. Adrian caught me by the elbow before I hit the ground, pulling me tightly against his side, shielding me with his own body.
"Where is he?" Adrian demanded, his voice trembling with a fury I had never heard from him before. "Where is the body, Marcus?"
"Why don't you use the key?" Marcus smiled, pointing toward a heavy iron floor hatch located in the corner of the warehouse—the very hatch the rusted key in my pocket was meant to open. "The vault hasn't been opened since your father died, Adrian. David is still down there. Preserved in the cold concrete vault where your family buried him alive."
Marcus suddenly lunged backward into the shadows behind a stack of crates.
BANG!
Adrian fired, but the bullet only shattered a wooden pallet as Marcus ducked through a reinforced security door and slammed it shut behind him.
CLIK-WHIRR.
The electronic deadbolt engaged from the other side.
"Marcus!" Adrian shouted, firing three rounds into the steel lock, but the heavy-duty mechanism held firm.
"Boss! We heard shots!" Marcus’s head of security, radioing in from the perimeter, broke through our comms. "Are you alright? We're breaching the perimeter now!"
"Secure the exits!" Adrian ordered, his chest heaving as adrenaline surged through his veins. "Marcus Vance is trying to escape through the east tunnel! Do not let him leave this property alive!"
"Adrian..." I whispered, looking down at the rusted iron floor hatch near our feet. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely hold the key. "He’s down there. David has been down there all these years."

Adrian looked at me, his slate-gray eyes filled with a heartbreaking mixture of agony and fierce devotion. He knew what opening that hatch meant. It meant confronting the darkest, most unforgivable sin of his family’s past—a sin that connected us in ways neither of us could have ever imagined.
"Let’s open it," Adrian said softly, taking the key from my trembling hand.
