Chapter 17 - THE LEGACY RESTOREDOne Month Later.

The formal dedication ceremony for the David Martinez Memorial Research Center was held on a brilliant autumn afternoon on the grounds of the Morgan Botanical Sanctuary.

The center—funded entirely by the Morgan-Kane Foundation—was dedicated to environmental safety, independent toxicological research, and free medical care for underprivileged families.

Hundreds of people filled the courtyard, including the Mayor of New York, leading scientists, and families from the Shadows who had once been written off by the city.

I stood at the podium in a tailored cream dress, looking out over the crowd. Mia stood proudly beside me, holding a bouquet of white roses, while Adrian stood a few paces back, his hands resting gently on little Leo’s shoulders as our son chased autumn leaves across the stone paving.

"My first husband, David, was a man who believed that truth matters more than wealth," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear and steady, echoing across the sunlit courtyard. "He tried to warn us about the darkness buried beneath our feet. For a long time, I believed his story ended in tragedy."

I looked back, catching Adrian’s slate-gray eyes watching me with unyielding devotion and pride.

"I was wrong," I continued, smiling softly. "Because out of that darkness, another man stepped forward—a man who chose to tear down his own empire to bring those secrets into the light. My husband, Adrian. Together, we didn't just uncover the past; we transformed it into a promise for the future."

The applause that followed was deafening. Hundreds of people stood up, clapping and cheering, honoring not just a memorial, but the redemption of a family and a city.

After the ceremony, as the crowd dispersed into the gardens, Adrian walked up to me, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.

"You were extraordinary up there," Adrian whispered in my ear.

"I had good inspiration," I turned around in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck. "You know, Mr. Kane, for a ruthless mafia boss, you're getting remarkably soft in your old age."

Adrian chuckled, a rich, deep sound that vibrated against my chest. "Only for you, Mrs. Kane. Only for you."
