Chapter 6 - THE TRAITOR WITHINWithin ten minutes, the mansion was locked down tighter than a maximum-security prison. Marcus and Viktor had swept the entire estate, securing the perimeter and rounding up the remaining staff in the main receiving hall.

Adrian stood at the head of the long oak conference table in the basement command center. The air smelled of cordite and fresh blood. Two tied-up figures were shoved onto the concrete floor in front of him: one was a terrified junior security guard named Miller, and the other was an unknown operative wearing a Vance syndicate tattoo on his forearm.
I sat in a corner with Mia asleep in my lap, her head resting heavily against my shoulder. Adrian had insisted we stay in the secure command bunker while he dealt with the breach.
"Talk," Adrian said, his voice dangerously soft as he stared down at the trembling security guard.
"Mr. Kane, I swear to God I didn't know!" Miller sobbed, pressing his forehead against the cold concrete. "Julian’s men—they grabbed my sister! They said if I didn't disable the biometric sensor on the north wing for ten minutes, they'd kill her! I swear I didn't mean to compromise the house!"
Adrian looked down at the man with absolute, chilling disgust.
"Family," Adrian murmured, tasting the word like poison. "You traded my life, and the lives of an innocent woman and child, to save your own blood."
Adrian looked at Marcus. "Take him to the harbor warehouse. Let him think about his sister while he spends the next ten years breaking rocks in a federal penitentiary. As for the other one..." Adrian glanced at the silent Vance operative. "Send him back to Julian in a body bag with a note attached."
"Consider it done, boss," Marcus replied sharply, hauling the men to their feet and dragging them out of the room.
The heavy steel door sealed shut, leaving just Adrian, me, Mia, and Viktor in the bunker.
Adrian walked slowly over toward us. He crouched down beside my chair, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face. His thumb brushed my cheek, wiping away a lingering tear.
"Are you still shaking?" he asked softly, his voice dropping its harsh edge.
"I thought we were going to die, Adrian," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I brought my little girl into a war zone. This was a mistake. We should leave. We can go back to Brooklyn, we can—"
"No," Adrian interrupted, his grip on my hand tightening with fierce, unyielding possession. "You are not leaving. You are safe here. Do you understand me? I built this empire with blood and iron, and I will tear Manhattan down to the bedrock before I let anyone touch you or Mia."
I looked up into his eyes, searching for the monster the city whispered about. All I saw was a man who had fought tooth and nail to survive a lonely world, and who had just found something worth protecting.
"Why?" I whispered. "Why do this for us, Adrian? We're nobody."
May you like
Adrian smiled faintly—a sad, crooked smile that reached his eyes for the very first time.
"Because for the first time in thirty-six years," Adrian whispered, his thumb tracing my lower lip, "someone looked at me and didn't see a monster. Your daughter saw a lonely man who needed a family. And God help me, Elena... she was right."
