Mia was now eleven, a bright, fiercely independent student who spent her weekends volunteering at the botanical sanctuary’s children’s education program. Leo was four, an energetic ball of curiosity who followed Adrian everywhere around the estate—wearing a miniature pair of work boots and "helping" his dad prune the rosebushes.
I had stepped into a full executive role co-managing the Morgan-Kane Foundation alongside Maria, turning the family’s vast resources into a permanent engine for social good, environmental restoration, and community healthcare.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the entire family gathered on the back lawn for a simple family picnic.
Adrian sat on a checkered blanket, trying and failing to build a complex Lego castle with Leo, while Mia laughed at her dad’s exaggerated expressions of defeat.
I walked across the grass carrying a basket of fresh fruit, watching them from a distance. The sunlight caught the diamond on my ring finger, sparkling brightly against the rich black earth of the garden we had planted together.
Adrian looked up, caught my eye across the lawn, and smiled—that warm, complete smile that belonged to me and our children alone.
He stood up, brushed the grass from his knees, and walked over to me, taking the basket from my hands and setting it down on the blanket.
"What’s that look for?" he asked, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me close.
"Just realizing how far we've come," I murmured, resting my hands on his chest. "From a drafty apartment in Brooklyn and a cold, terrifying mansion in Manhattan... to right here."
