Chapter 8 - THE MIDTOWN SHOWDOWNThe grand ballroom of the Midtown Country Club smelled of old money, expensive cigars, and sheer panic.

When the heavy mahogany doors swung open and Adrian Kane walked in, the entire room of fifty high-powered syndicate capos and corporate executives fell instantly, deathly silent.

And walking right beside him—dressed in a stunning, midnight-blue executive suit Adrian had had delivered that afternoon—was me.

Julian Vance sat at the head of the long oak table, looking pale, exhausted, and furious. His tailored suit was wrinkled, and the dark circles under his eyes betrayed a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.

"Adrian," Julian sneered, standing up from his chair as we approached. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face here after your goons attacked my properties this morning."

"My goons?" Adrian raised an eyebrow, stopping two feet away from Julian. "Julian, your men broke into my private residence with automatic weapons and tried to assassinate an innocent woman and child. What we did this morning was merely report your corporate tax fraud to the federal authorities. Consider it community service."

"You ruined me!" Julian snarled, lunging forward, his face twisting with rage. "You liquidated my accounts! You bought out my board!"

"I didn't buy your board, Julian," Adrian replied coldly. "They simply realized that backing a loser who targets women and children is bad for business."

Julian’s eyes shot past Adrian, locking onto me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You!" Julian hissed, taking a step toward me. "This pathetic little maid and her bastard brat—you let them ruin a century-old dynasty because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself!"

Before Julian could finish the sentence, the air in the room went dead.

Adrian didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon.

With blinding, terrifying speed, Adrian grabbed Julian by the throat, slammed him down onto the long conference table, and pinned him there with one hand, while his other hand casually reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a gold-plated fountain pen.

The fifty syndicate bosses in the room didn't dare breathe.

"You called her a pathetic maid," Adrian whispered, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers with the weight of an executioner's axe. "And you spoke of her daughter with disrespect."

Adrian pressed the tip of the gold pen against Julian’s jugular vein, just hard enough to draw a single drop of blood.

"Every asset, every share, and every square inch of territory the Vance family holds now belongs to the Morgan-Kane Trust," Adrian stated, his slate-gray eyes boring straight into Julian’s terrified soul. "You are broke, Julian. You are powerless. And if you ever mention Elena or Mia’s name again, I won't just take your empire... I’ll take your breath."

Adrian let go, shoving Julian backward onto the table. Julian slumped forward, gasping for air, completely broken.

Adrian turned around, offering his arm to me with the casual grace of a king claiming his queen.

"Shall we go, Elena?" Adrian asked softly. "I promised Mia we’d be back in time for ice cream."
