Chapter 3 - THE BLOOD FEUD REVEALEDJulian Vance wasn't intimidated. He smirked, sliding his hands casually into his trouser pockets as he sauntered further into the study, completely ignoring the barrels of two submachine guns pointed directly at his chest.

"Put those away, boys," Julian scoffed, waving a hand dismissively at Marcus and Viktor. "You know as well as I do that a blood-bath in this room creates too much paperwork. Besides, I brought a gift."

Julian snapped his fingers. A heavy-set man behind him stepped forward, slamming a thick, leather-bound ledger onto Adrian’s pristine mahogany desk.

"What is this?" Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing.

"That, dear cousin—or should I say, rival—is the complete financial audit of the shipping docks in Queens," Julian said, his voice dripping with triumphant venom. "The docks your grandfather stole from mine back in 1984. My board has voted to repossess them. Legally. Through federal bankruptcy courts."

Adrian didn't even glance at the ledger. He knew every corporate chess piece on the board before Julian even touched them.

"You bought out the municipal debt attached to the Queens harbor," Adrian stated, his tone flat and unimpressed. "You think a few million dollars in public bonds gives you leverage over Morgan-Kane Logistics?"

"It gives me control of the primary import channel," Julian corrected, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous hiss. "Which means within forty-eight hours, your supply chains will freeze. Your international shipments will rot in international waters. And your empire will start bleeding out from the inside."

Julian’s eyes darted past Adrian’s shoulder, locking onto me and Mia standing frozen by the bookshelf. A cruel, sadistic smile spread across Julian’s face.

"Of course," Julian purred, "I can see why you've been distracted lately, Adrian. Domestic bliss suits you. A cute little maid, a bastard child... Tell me, does the little girl know what kind of monster her new 'daddy' really is? Does she know how many bodies are buried beneath these manicured lawns?"

My blood ran cold. I pulled Mia tighter against my chest, closing her ears with my hands.

In a fraction of a second, the room erupted.

There was no sound of a struggle. No warning.

One moment Julian was standing there smiling; the next, Adrian had closed the distance between them, grabbed Julian by his expensive silk lapels, and slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf with enough force to shatter the wood.

The two armed guards clicked their weapons forward, ready to fire at Julian’s men, but Adrian raised a single finger, freezing everyone in place.

Adrian’s face was inches from Julian’s, his slate-gray eyes burning with absolute, unadulterated fury.

"You can threaten my business," Adrian whispered, each word dropping like a lead weight into the silent room. "You can try to choke my supply chains, and you can play your petty corporate games until your fingers bleed."

Adrian tightened his grip on Julian’s lapels, lifting him slightly off the floor.

"But if you ever—ever—speak my name or reference this child in front of her again," Adrian continued, his voice so quiet it was terrifying, "I won't wait for the federal courts, Julian. I’ll peel the skin off your bones and mail your corporate board the pieces in a velvet box. Do I make myself crystal clear?"

Julian’s bravado vanished instantly. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his breathing turned shallow as he stared into the eyes of a man who had killed empires with a single word.

"C-crystal clear," Julian choked out.

Adrian shoved him backward with disgust. Julian stumbled, nearly tripping over his own Italian leather shoes, before straightening his jacket with trembling fingers.

"You'll regret this, Kane," Julian spat, backing toward the double doors. "The syndicate council won't let you mix personal weakness with business. You're vulnerable now. And I'm going to take everything you built."

With that, Julian turned and stormed out, his guards scrambling to keep pace.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, leaving a suffocating silence in their wake.

Slowly, Adrian exhaled, running a hand through his dark hair. The terrifying aura of the syndicate boss receded just an inch, replaced by a heavy, exhausted shadow. He turned around to face us.

Mia slipped out from behind my skirt, walking right up to Adrian without any fear at all. She reached out and patted his knee.

"He was a very mean man," Mia announced seriously. "You should have fed him to the dogs."

A sudden, sharp bark of laughter escaped Adrian’s lips. It was the first real, unguarded laugh I had ever heard from him.

He knelt down, looking at Mia with a gaze so intensely tender it made my breath hitch.

"I’ll keep that in mind for next time, princess," Adrian murmured softly. Then, he looked up at me, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Elena. Pack your things."

May you like

My heart stopped. "What?"

"You and Mia aren't staying in the servants' quarters anymore," Adrian said, standing up and towering over us. "Effective immediately, you're moving into the master wing. Because if Julian thinks he can use you to get to me, he’s about to find out just how dangerous it is to play in my house."
