Chapter 9 - THE PROPOSAL UNDER THE STARSTwo weeks later, the war was nothing more than a memory whispered in the dark corners of the underworld.

The Vances had dissolved, their territories absorbed into a new, transparent philanthropic trust managed directly by the Morgan-Kane Foundation. The slums of Brooklyn where I used to scrub floors were receiving millions in anonymous infrastructure grants, and the Shadows of our past felt like another lifetime entirely.

It was a warm Saturday evening. The Manhattan skyline glittered across the Hudson like a field of scattered diamonds.

Up on the private rooftop garden of Adrian’s Manhattan mansion, fairy lights twinkled overhead, and soft jazz played from hidden speakers.

Mia was fast asleep in her new canopy bed downstairs, exhausted from a full day of playing dress-up with her custom wardrobe.

I stood at the glass railing of the penthouse terrace, sipping a glass of sparkling cider as the cool night breeze played with my hair.

Footsteps crunched softly behind me. Strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me flush against a hard, familiar chest. Adrian rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

"Penny for your thoughts, Ms. Vance—er, Ms. Elena," Adrian murmured playfully.

I leaned back against him, smiling softly. "I was just thinking about the day we met. When Mia walked into your study and told you that you had a lonely face."

Adrian chuckled, his arms tightening around me. "She saved my life, you know."

I turned around in his embrace, looking up at him under the starlight. "Don't be dramatic. You saved us."

"No," Adrian said, his slate-gray eyes softening with an intensity that took my breath away. "For thirty-six years, I lived in a fortress of concrete and blood. I thought power was about control. I thought love was a weakness."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. My heart skipped a beat, hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"Then a six-year-old girl walked into my office and demanded I be her daddy," Adrian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "And her mother walked into my life and taught me what it actually means to be alive."

Adrian dropped slowly to one knee on the rooftop terrace, opening the velvet box to reveal a diamond ring that caught the starlight like fire.

"Elena," Adrian said, looking up at me with absolute, unshielded devotion. "I know I'm a dangerous man. I know my world is dark and complicated. But I promise you, for the rest of my days, I will protect you, I will cherish you, and I will be the father your daughter deserves."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, but for the first time in my life, they weren't tears of grief or fear. They were tears of pure, overwhelming joy.

"Yes," I choked out, a laugh bubbling up through my tears. "Yes, Adrian. A thousand times, yes."

Adrian stood up, slipped the ring onto my finger, and pulled me into a kiss that stole the breath right out of my lungs—deep, passionate, and filled with a promise that spanned eternity.
