Chapter 5 - The Midnight Intrusion

The master suite was a fortress of mahogany, velvet, and bulletproof glass. Alina sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, watching Mia sleep peacefully beneath a goose-down blanket.
She couldn't sleep. The locks on the door had been upgraded. Armed guards now patrolled the outer hallway exclusively on Lorenzo’s direct orders. She was safe, yet she felt more trapped than ever.
A soft click echoed from the balcony doors.
Alina froze. The balcony was twenty feet above the courtyard. No one could climb up there unless they had specialized gear—or inside help.
She slipped out of bed, her bare feet making no sound on the carpet, and reached for the heavy silver candlestick on the dressing table.
The heavy velvet curtains parted slowly. A gloved hand slipped through, followed by a dark silhouette holding a suppressed pistol.
Before the intruder could step fully into the room, a massive shadow lunged from the shadows of the hallway connecting to Lorenzo’s private study.
It wasn't a guard. It was Lorenzo himself, wearing a black silk robe, his eyes gleaming with lethal fury.
Crack!
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He disarmed the intruder with brutal, practiced efficiency, slamming the man’s head against the marble fireplace mantel. The assassin slumped to the floor, unconscious.
Alina dropped the candlestick, her hands flying to her mouth to stifle a scream.

Lorenzo stood over the bleeding intruder, his chest rising and falling heavily. He didn't look like a CEO or a politician; he looked like the executioner who had terrorized New York for a decade.
"They couldn't even wait twenty-four hours," Lorenzo whispered darkly, wiping blood from his knuckles.
