Chapter 2 - The Foundation Crumbles

Forty-eight hours after the tragicomedy at the clinic, Marcus sat in the living room of the luxury condo he had fought so hard to keep in the divorce settlement. The room was dark, smelled of stale whiskey, and was cluttered with half-empty bottles.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing. It was his bank, his investors, and his mother—in that order.

"Marcus, open the door!" Roxanne demanded, banging her fists against the heavy oak front entrance. "The bank representatives are down in the lobby! They're saying there's an eviction notice!"

Marcus dragged himself to the door and unlocked it. Roxanne stormed in, looking frantic, her expensive designer outfit unraveled by stress.

"What is going on, Marcus? Why is the bank saying this condo doesn't belong to you?"

"It doesn't," Marcus said, his voice completely hollow. He held up a thick legal envelope that had been served to him that morning. "Julianne didn't own the condo, Roxanne. She leased it under her family's trust fund. She paid the rent five years in advance using her own personal money. When she signed the divorce papers, she canceled the lease extension. The property reverts back to the Vance Estate immediately."

Roxanne’s jaw dropped. "The Vance Estate? As in... Vance Global Logistics? The multi-billion-dollar shipping empire?!"

"Yes," Marcus laughed bitterly, taking another swig from his glass. "Julianne wasn't some poor, pathetic orphan like we treated her. Her grandfather is Sir Richard Vance. She walked away from billions to marry me... and I kicked her out for a woman who padded her stomach with hormonal drugs."

"No... no, that's impossible!" Roxanne stammered, pulling at her hair. "If she had that kind of money, why did she let us insult her? Why did she let us treat her like a servant?!"

"Because she loved me," Marcus yelled, throwing his glass against the wall, shattering it into a thousand pieces. "And now she's gone! The SUV? It was registered under her name. The police just towed it from the driveway for unauthorized possession! We have nothing!"

Meanwhile, across the globe in London, Julianne stepped off the private jet into the cool rain of Mayfair. She was greeted not by a modest taxi, but by a fleet of black Rolls-Royces flanked by private security details.

Waiting at the end of the red carpet was an elderly man with a silver cane and piercing blue eyes. Sir Richard Vance opened his arms as his granddaughter approached.

"Welcome home, Julianne," Sir Richard said softly, hugging her tightly as the little girls gasped at the grand estate in front of them. "I kept your seat at the head of the board open. It’s time you take back what belongs to you."

Julianne looked at the skyline of London, her soft demeanor replaced by a steel resolve. "I'm ready, Grandfather. But first... I have a debt to collect."
