Chapter 4 - A Ghost from the Past

Three months passed. Marcus was reduced to living in a small, run-down two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city with his mother and Roxanne. The grand life they once boasted about was completely gone.

Roxanne was forced to work as a entry-level retail clerk, while Marcus spent his days drowning in legal notices and court summonses.

One afternoon, while searching for any remaining assets in an old bank box, Marcus stumbled across an unopened envelope addressed to him from four years ago. It was signed by a private DNA laboratory.

Frowning, Marcus ripped it open. Inside was a paternity report he had completely forgotten about—one he had dismissed back when Roxanne convinced him that Julianne was being unfaithful.

His eyes scanned the document, and his heart violently hammered against his ribs.

*> Paternity Test Result: Marcus Henderson is confirmed to be the biological father of Lily Henderson and Maya Henderson with 99.99% probability.

Below the legal document was a handwritten note from Julianne, dated the day she placed it in the box:

"Marcus, I know your family doubts me. I know your sister whispers poison in your ear every night. But these girls are yours, and I pray one day you see them for the blessings they are, rather than the disappointment your family insists they are."

Marcus fell to his knees, clutching the paper to his chest as violent sobs racked his body.

He hadn't just lost a wealthy wife; he had abandoned his own flesh and blood. He had tossed away two innocent little girls who adored him, all for the promise of a son that never existed.

"What have I done?" he wailed into the empty room. "What have I done?!"

Determined to find her, Marcus spent his last remaining savings to hire a low-grade private detective. A week later, the investigator brought him a glossy business magazine.

On the cover was a striking photograph of Julianne, dressed in a sharp power suit, standing alongside Sir Richard Vance at a global logistics summit in Geneva.

The headline read: "THE RETURN OF THE VANCE HEIRESS: JULIANNE VANCE TAKES THE HELM OF A $20 BILLION EMPIRE."

Marcus’s hands shook as he read the article. It mentioned her upcoming return to the city for a high-profile international charity gala at the Grand Imperial Hotel—the very hotel where Marcus used to host his lavish corporate dinners.

"I have to see her," Marcus whispered, his eyes burning with a mixture of desperation and grief. "I have to ask for forgiveness."
