Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Six months later, the trial of the Henderson family came to a sensational close.

Marcus was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for grand larceny and financial fraud. Roxanne received three years of probation and community service, while their mother was forced to liquidate her remaining personal belongings to pay off court-ordered restitution to the Vance Foundation.

Penelope was eventually apprehended in another state, facing charges for medical fraud and identity theft.

On a quiet tuesday morning, Julianne walked into the visitor's room of the state penitentiary. She wore a simple white suit, calm and poised.

On the other side of the thick glass sat Marcus. His hair was shaved, his cheeks sunken, and the arrogant glow he once carried was completely extinguished.

He picked up the heavy plastic phone. Julianne did the same.

"You came," Marcus whispered, his voice hoarse.

"I came to deliver the final paperwork," Julianne said, sliding a envelope under the glass divider toward the guard. "It's the formal name change document. Lily and Maya no longer carry the surname Henderson. They are now officially Vances."

Marcus closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his cheek. "I deserve this. I know I do. But Julianne... tell me one thing. Did you ever love me?"

Julianne looked at him for a long moment.

"I loved the man I thought you were," she said honestly. "The man who promised to protect me. But you let your sister and your family turn you into a coward. You traded real love for vanity."

"Is there any chance... when I get out... that I can see them?" Marcus choked out, his fingers pressing against the glass.

Julianne stood up, smoothing her suit jacket.
