Chapter 3 - The Price of Arrogance

Within two weeks, the Henderson family went from local high-society darlings to social pariahs.

Penelope had fled town after Marcus threatened to sue her for fraud, but the damage was already done. The stories of the fake pregnancy and the disastrous ultrasound had leaked to the press, utterly destroying Marcus’s reputation in the business community.

Without Julianne’s secret financial backing—which she had quietly funneled into his boutique investment firm through third-party proxies for five years—Marcus’s business began to crater. His clients pulled their portfolios one by one.

"Mr. Henderson," his chief accountant said nervously during an emergency meeting. "Our primary backer, Aspiration Holdings, just pulled their $15 million credit line. They cite 'reputational risk and breach of contract.'"

"Who owns Aspiration Holdings?!" Marcus demanded, pounding his desk. "Get them on the phone! I'll explain everything!"

"We tried, sir," the accountant replied quietly. "The CEO refused to talk to you. But they did send a formal notice. They are demanding immediate repayment of the $5 million loan you took out last month to buy Penelope that diamond ring."

Marcus slumped into his chair, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. He had used the firm's operational capital as collateral, fully expecting his "son" to inherit the Henderson family trust fund—which, he realized too late, was also backed by Julianne’s hidden investments.

Desperate, Marcus turned to his sister. "Roxanne, you need to sell your jewelry. Mother, sell the beach house! We need $5 million by Friday or I’m going to prison for fraud!"

"Sell my house?!" his mother screamed from the leather sofa. "That house has been in our family for three generations!"

"It was paid off by Julianne three years ago!" Marcus shouted back, his voice breaking. "Don't you get it yet?! Everything we had... every single drop of luxury we enjoyed was paid for by the woman you kicked out of this family!"

While the Hendersons drowned in panic, Julianne sat in a high-rise office overlooking the Thames, reviewing financial reports with her chief strategist.

"The Henderson firm is on the brink of bankruptcy, Miss Vance," the strategist reported. "If we execute the margin call today, they will lose their corporate office by noon tomorrow."

"Do it," Julianne said without hesitation. "And make sure the story reaches the morning papers. I want everyone to know that the Hendersons built their kingdom on sand."
