Chapter 12 - THE GHOST FROM THE PASTThe blast door groaned softly as Alessandro kicked it wide open, his assault rifle leveled directly at the center of the room.

"Nobody move!" Alessandro shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the underground laboratory.

I rushed past his shoulder, my eyes frantically scanning the room.

In the corner, sitting unharmed on a padded examination chair playing with a small mechanical puzzle, was Emma. When she saw us, her face lit up with an innocent smile.

"Mommy! Daddy! Look, the funny man gave me a puzzle box!"

Standing beside her, casually sipping a cup of black coffee while leaning against a mainframe computer displaying complex DNA strand mappings, was a man with silver-streaked hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and a calm, unnerving smile.

It wasn't Dominic. It wasn't a rival cartel boss.

It was Dr. Marcus Vance—my uncle, who had reportedly died in a plane crash twenty years ago during the collapse of the Eastern Bloc research programs.

"Marcus?" I gasped, lowering my pistol a fraction of an inch as cold shock paralyzed my vocal cords. "You're... you're dead. The family records said your flight went down over the Baltic Sea!"

Uncle Marcus chuckled, setting his coffee mug down on the stainless-steel desk. He looked older, wiser, and terrifyingly detached from reality.

"Plane crashes are so cliché, my dear niece," Marcus said smoothly, adjusting his glasses. "When you fake your death as often as I do, you learn that people are remarkably quick to believe whatever obituaries you write for them."

Alessandro didn't lower his weapon by a single millimeter. His finger hovered dangerously over the trigger. "Explain why you took my daughter, Marcus, before I turn this bunker into your permanent grave."

"Oh, put the gun down, boy," Marcus sighed, waving his hand dismissively. "I didn't kidnap her to harm her. I borrowed her. I needed a fresh, uncontaminated tissue sample directly from a true third-generation Moretti-Vance bloodline to finalize my life's work."

He turned toward the massive mainframe computer behind him. The glowing screens suddenly shifted, displaying thousands of lines of genetic code, neural network mappings, and synthetic organ regeneration charts.

"What is that?" I asked, stepping cautiously closer while keeping one hand on Emma, who had happily hopped down from her chair and run over to wrap her arms around my legs.

"That, Elena, is immortality," Marcus said, his eyes gleaming with a mad, brilliant fervor. "Vanessa was a clumsy amateur. She used basic, outdated surrogacy methods to trap Alessandro. But me? I engineered the entire bloodline match years ago. I planted the genetic triggers in your father's financial accounts, arranged for your paths to cross inside this estate, and ensured that Emma would be born with the exact DNA sequence required to unlock the ultimate biological firewall."

Alessandro stepped forward, his boots clanking loudly against the concrete floor. "A firewall against what?"

"Against the syndicate council," Marcus smiled darkly. "Against every rival cartel in Europe and America that wants control of the Moretti wealth. With Emma's genetic signature integrated into the central mainframe of the city's automated defense and financial networks, whoever controls her bloodline controls every bank account, every shipping port, and every weapon depot from here to Zurich."

Before Marcus could reach for a secondary console, Alessandro moved with blinding, terrifying speed.

He didn't shoot. He lunged across the room, tackling Marcus to the concrete floor, the heavy thud of the impact shaking the dust from the ceiling pipes.
