Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING VOWS OF BLOOD AND GOLDThe applause inside the grand Moretti ballroom shook the crystal chandeliers, but all I could hear was the steady, grounding beat of Alessandro’s heart as he slipped the heavy, custom-forged platinum band onto my finger.

It wasn't a traditional wedding ring. Embedded within the cold, polished metal was a single, flawless black diamond—the signature hallmark of the Moretti dynasty, matching the heirloom bracelet resting securely on Emma’s wrist.
"You look breathtaking, Elena," Alessandro murmured, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made the three hundred powerful guests, foreign dignitaries, and underworld bosses fade entirely into the background.
"You didn't tell me my father would actually be the one walking me down the aisle," I whispered back, glancing sideways toward the front row where Victor Vance sat upright, dressed in a sharp, tailored Italian suit, looking every bit the retired financial titan rather than a hunted ghost.
"A debt is a debt, and family is family," Alessandro replied, his voice dropping into that smooth, hypnotic register I loved so much. "Besides, if your father tries to run away again, my snipers have strict orders to shoot him in the knee."
I couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped my lips. Just a few months ago, I was scrubbing these very marble floors with a bucket and a mop, hiding my daughter in the shadows, terrified that a single wrong move would get us killed. Now, I stood here as the legal wife of the most feared crime lord in New York and the reigning matriarch of an empire.
Suddenly, a tiny pair of arms wrapped tightly around the hem of my white-and-emerald wedding gown.
"Mommy, can I eat the big cake now?" Emma piped up, her wide blue eyes sparkling with mischief as she held up a sticky finger coated in sweet frosting she must have stolen from the kitchen five minutes early.
Alessandro chuckled, scooping our three-year-old daughter up into his broad arms with effortless strength. "Not yet, little princess. First, you have to help your mother and me cut it. After all, you're the one who started this whole revolution."

The crowd erupted into laughter and cheers as the orchestra struck up a rich, sweeping melody. For the first time in my life, the shadows felt miles away. The past was buried, our enemies were locked away or reformed, and our future was carved in stone.
Or so we thought.
