Chapter 3 - THE SKELETONS IN THE CLOSETThe morning sun broke over Manhattan, casting sharp, golden beams across the opulent penthouse suite that Alessandro had abruptly forced us to move into. Gone was the cramped, damp basement room where I used to fold towels and listen to the faint hum of the mansion's boilers. Now, towering floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Central Park, and Persian rugs cushioned Emma’s bare feet as she chased a robotic toy across the parquet floor.

Yet, despite the luxury, my skin felt tight and prickling with dread.
A soft knock sounded at the double doors. Before I could answer, the heavy wood swung open, and Alessandro strode in. He had already shed his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt rolled up at the elbows, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms. He looked exhausted; dark circles bruised the skin beneath his sharp eyes. He hadn't slept a wink since the ballroom incident.
"The family council is gathering downstairs," Alessandro said without preamble, tossing a heavy leather-bound ledger onto the glass coffee table. "They want an emergency hearing to verify Emma’s lineage through official channels. They think this is a ploy by a rival faction to hijack the succession."
I clutched my coffee mug tighter, the ceramic warmth doing nothing to thaw the ice in my stomach. "Let them test her a hundred times. The DNA is undeniable. But Alessandro... you know your uncle, Dominic. He won't just accept a housekeeper’s daughter as the sole heir to the syndicate, even if your blood runs in her veins. They’ll dig into my past. They’ll tear my entire life apart."
Alessandro crossed the room in two long strides, stopping right in front of me. He reached out, his warm fingers gently catching my chin and forcing me to look up into his dark, penetrating gaze.
"Let them try," Alessandro murmured, his thumb brushing a stray lock of hair away from my cheek. "Nobody touches you, Elena. Not Dominic, not the council, and certainly not anyone else who thinks they can rewrite the rules in my house."
"You don't understand," I whispered, pulling back slightly. "My past isn't clean, Alessandro. Before I took the job as your housekeeper... I wasn't just some random girl from the countryside."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed slightly, a spark of dangerous curiosity flashing in their depths. "Go on."
"My father wasn't a servant," I continued, the confession tasting like ash on my tongue. "He was Victor Vance. The chief accountant for the Russian Bratva syndicate before your father orchestrated his execution fifteen years ago. I came into this estate under an assumed name to find out the truth about my family's ruin. Taking the housekeeping job was my revenge plan... until I found out Vanessa was plotting to kill an innocent newborn, and my plans changed."
The room went dead silent. The only sound was Emma laughing softly in the corner as her toy car bumped against a velvet sofa.
I waited for the explosion. I waited for him to call his guards, to brand me as a spy, an infiltrator, an enemy within the gates.
Instead, a slow, humorless smile spread across Alessandro’s lips.
"Victor Vance," Alessandro said softly, a dark amusement threading through his voice. "The man who managed to embezzle forty million dollars from the Russian mob right under my father's nose before disappearing off the grid. Everyone thought he took the money to the grave."
"He didn't," I whispered. "The records, the offshore accounts, the encrypted drives—they're all hidden. And Vanessa somehow found out about them. That’s why she was so desperate to secure her place as your wife; she thought marrying you would give her legal access to the Moretti vaults to hunt down my father's hidden fortune."
Alessandro stepped closer, his chest nearly brushing mine. The intense, magnetic pull between us was undeniable, a raw physical tension that had simmered beneath the surface of our quiet employer-employee dynamic for years.
"So," Alessandro whispered, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic register. "My head housekeeper is actually the daughter of the greatest financial ghost in the underground world, and the biological mother of my true heir."
Before I could reply, the heavy oak doors banged open.
Standing in the doorway was Dominic Moretti, his silver hair slicked back, flanked by four armed enforcers. His cold, predatory eyes swept over the luxurious penthouse, landing heavily on Emma, then on Alessandro, and finally locking onto me with undisguised venom.
"Well, well," Dominic sneered, stepping into the room with a heavy, deliberate gait. "It seems our ruthless Don has been played for a fool by a common cleaning girl and a Bratva ghost. Turn around, Elena Vance. The council has issued an arrest warrant for treason and corporate espionage."

Alessandro didn’t even blink. He slowly stepped in front of me, his hand resting casually near the hidden holster beneath his left arm.
"Step out of my penthouse, Dominic," Alessandro said, his voice dripping with lethal calm, "before I show you what happens to family members who don't know their place."
