Chapter 4 - THE BLOODLINE TRIALThe subterranean courtroom beneath the Moretti headquarters smelled of damp stone, old paper, and ancient menace. There were no judges here, no juries of ordinary citizens, and no constitutional rights. There was only the Table of Seven—the ruling elders of the syndicate whose word was absolute law across the tri-state area.

I sat in the center of the wooden dock, my hands cuffed lightly behind my back not because I was dangerous, but because Dominic insisted on protocol. Emma was safely upstairs guarded by Alessandro’s most trusted sniper, completely insulated from the cold, stone walls of the tribunal.

Alessandro stood directly beside my chair, refusing to take his designated seat at the head of the table. His sheer presence dominated the room, casting a heavy shadow over his uncle Dominic, who sat at the opposite end leaning heavily on a carved obsidian cane.

"The evidence has been reviewed," Dominic announced, his gravelly voice echoing off the arched brick ceiling. He slid a thick dossier across the polished walnut table. "Elena Vance—daughter of the traitor Victor Vance. She infiltrated this estate under a false identity with the intent to sabotage Moretti assets. Furthermore, she claims her illegitimate child is the rightful heir to the syndicate. The council moves for immediate termination of the prisoner, and institutionalization of the child under family guardianship."

A murmur of agreement rippled through the seated elders.

I closed my eyes, bracing for the inevitable. I had survived fifteen years in hiding, three years scrubbing floors in the lion's den, and the constant terror of Vanessa’s watchful eyes. To die here in the dark didn't feel like a defeat; it felt like the final, logical chapter of a doomed life.

"Motion denied," Alessandro said.

The three simple words dropped into the room like a grenade.

Dominic slammed his obsidian cane against the floor. "Alessandro! Have you lost your mind? She is a Bratva rat! Her bloodline is tainted! You cannot legitimize a bastard child born from an infiltrated servant!"

"She is not a rat," Alessandro replied, his voice terrifyingly calm as he pulled a thick, encrypted flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the center of the table. "And she didn't infiltrate the estate to destroy us. She infiltrated it because Vanessa and your own inner circle were selling Moretti shipping routes to the rival Colombian cartel behind my back."

The elders gasped. Several of them leaned forward, their eyes darting nervously toward Dominic.

"That's a lie!" Dominic snarled, his face twisting into an ugly mask of rage as he stood up, his old bones popping audibly. "He's blinded by lust for a cleaning whore! Guard—execute them both!"

None of the guards moved. They couldn't. Along the perimeter of the room, every single surveillance camera and security terminal had suddenly flickered off, replaced by the red glow of Alessandro’s personal encryption protocol.

"You think I didn't know you were skimming from the docks, Uncle?" Alessandro walked slowly toward the head of the table, his eyes locked onto Dominic like a panther stalking a wounded deer. "You think I didn't trace the encrypted offshore wire transfers straight to your Swiss bank accounts? Vanessa was just your puppet, planting fake pregnancy documents to secure a compliant heir while you quietly liquidated the family holdings."

Dominic’s breath hitched. He reached frantically inside his heavy wool coat for a concealed revolver.

Before his fingers could even wrap around the grip, Alessandro’s hand blurred. A silver throwing knife—heavy, balanced, and razor-sharp—flashed through the air, embedding itself deep into the wood of the table precisely one millimeter away from Dominic’s thumb.

"Try it," Alessandro whispered, stepping right into his uncle's personal space. "And the next one goes through your skull."

Dominic slowly withdrew his empty hand, his face pale as death, sweat beading across his forehead.

"The council will vote on leadership right now," Alessandro declared, turning to face the terrified elders. "You can vote with Dominic and share his cell in the lower holding blocks, or you can vote to ratify Emma Moretti as my official, recognized heir, with her mother—Elena Vance—sitting beside me as my lawful wife."

The elders exchanged panicked, frantic glances. It took less than ten seconds for the oldest member of the council to raise a trembling hand.

"All in favor," the elder rasped.

One by one, every single hand at the table went up.
