Chapter 2 - THE GENETIC VERDICTThe private study on the third floor of the Moretti estate was a fortress of dark mahogany, bulletproof glass, and centuries-old secrets. Normally, as the head housekeeper, I only entered this room when the floors needed polishing or the hearth needed sweeping.

Now, I sat on the edge of a leather armchair, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird. Emma sat quietly on my lap, humming a little tune and swinging her legs, blissfully unaware that the men surrounding us controlled half the shipping ports on the East Coast.
Alessandro stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling window, staring out into the pouring rain. The medical scanner sat on the heavy oak desk between us, its green digital display pulsing rhythmically in the dim light.
"Explain," Alessandro said, his back still turned to us. The word wasn't a question; it was an executioner's axe hanging by a thread.
"There is nothing to explain," I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "I found her. Or rather... she was left behind. Three years ago, when the estate was being remodeled after the dock explosion, I found a basket near the staff quarters. The bracelet was around her wrist. I couldn't turn her in—you know how ruthless your uncle and the board were back then. If they knew an unclaimed child with Moretti blood existed outside an approved marriage, they would have disposed of her to prevent a succession war."
Alessandro turned around slowly. His eyes were bloodshot, the raw edges of his usual cold composure completely shattered.
"My mother's bracelet is custom-cast," Alessandro said quietly, walking toward us until he stopped just inches away. He knelt down, bringing himself eye-level with Emma. The little girl didn't shrink back; instead, she reached out with her small hand and poked Alessandro right on the tip of his sharp, aristocratic nose.
"You have a funny scratchy face," Emma giggled.
A ghost of a smile—the first genuine one I had ever seen on the ruthless crime lord's face—flickered across his lips before vanishing into grim determination. He gently took Emma’s wrist, lifting the heavy platinum-and-black-diamond bracelet into the light.
"This can only be opened with a biometric code linked to my father's or my own DNA," Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Or... through a direct maternal override programmed into the clinic's master database."
He stood up, walked to the desk, and picked up the portable scanner. Without asking for permission, he pressed the sterile cotton swab against the inside of Emma’s cheek, then quickly dragged it across his own palm, smearing a drop of blood into the reader.
The machine beeped. A tense, suffocating silence filled the study as the processing lights blinked red, yellow, and finally... solid, unyielding green.
A synthesized voice chimed from the device: “DNA MATCH CONFIRMED. DIRECT PATERNAL LINEAGE: 99.998%. PRIMARY BIOLOGICAL MATCH DETECTED.”
Alessandro staggered back, his hand gripping the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned bone-white. He stared at the screen, then at Emma, and finally up at me, his chest heaving.
"Three years ago," Alessandro whispered, the pieces violently clicking together in his mind. "The night of the warehouse betrayal... Vanessa claimed she miscarried our child while I was away handling the Italian syndicate."
"She didn't miscarry," I said softly, the bitter truth finally spilling out. "She paid a surrogate to carry an embryo using your stored samples without your consent, intending to use the child as a permanent anchor to control the Moretti empire. But when the surrogate suffered complications and went into labor early right here on the estate grounds during the chaos, Vanessa panicked. She wanted to eliminate both the surrogate and the baby to cover up a botched timeline."
I swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over my lashes.
"I heard the cries from the linen closet. I saved the baby, smuggled the surrogate out through the laundry chutes, and raised Emma as my own child right under your roof, praying every single day that Vanessa would never look too closely at the staff."
Alessandro closed his eyes. When he opened them, the sorrow was completely gone, replaced by a dark, terrifying fury that made the temperature in the room plummet.
"My security team will handle Vanessa," Alessandro said, his voice as cold as arctic ice. He walked over to the heavy oak door, pulled it open, and signaled his second-in-command waiting in the hallway.
"Lock Vanessa in the lower-level holding cells," Alessandro ordered. "Strip her of every asset, every title, and every cent she ever stole from my accounts. Let the family council know that the true heir to the Moretti empire has finally been found."

He turned back to me, his gaze softening with an intensity that stole the breath right out of my lungs.
"And you, Elena," Alessandro said, walking slowly back toward my chair. "You’ve spent three years hiding as my housekeeper. Starting tonight, you aren't cleaning my floors anymore."
