Chapter 3 - THE SISTER'S GHOST

Before Mark could react, the heavy sound of approaching sirens wailed in the distance. The red and blue lights began flashing through the front windows, slicing through the dim living room.
Sarah’s head snapped toward the window, panic twisting her features. "Mark, you called the police?!"
"I didn't call them," Mark whispered, his voice dead.
"I did," I said quietly.
Julian’s calm demeanor cracked for the first time. He frowned at me, his eyes narrowing. "Little girl, you think bringing the cops here solves anything? I have the best lawyers in the city. Whatever corporate fraud you think you’ve uncovered, Sarah signed all the documents. She’s the one going to prison, not me."
"I didn't call the police for financial fraud, Mr. Vance," I said, pulling a second item out of my pocket. It was an old, rusted silver key.
Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Where did you get that?!"
"I found it in the lining of the trunk you kept locked in the attic," I replied, my voice dropping an octave. "The trunk labeled with my sister’s name."
Mark froze. "What does Lily have to do with this? Lily died in a car accident four years ago!"
"Did she, Dad?" I looked directly at my mother, whose knees buckled once more. "Ask Mom why Julian’s name is on the title of the vehicle that hit Lily’s car on Highway 9. Ask her why Julian paid off her medical bills three weeks before Lily even had her accident."
The room dropped into absolute chaos. Mark lunged at Julian, grabbing him by the collar. "What is she talking about?! WHAT HAPPENED TO MY DAUGHTER?!"

Julian shoved Mark off with force, smoothing his suit jacket, though a faint sheen of sweat had broken out on his forehead. "Your daughter was an addict who drove off a guardrail, Mark. Don't listen to this crazy child."
"She wasn't an addict!" I screamed, the composure I had held all night finally shattering into raw rage. "She found out about you two four years ago! She was coming home to tell Dad, and you ran her off the road!"
