Chapter 7 - THE TWIST IN THE COURTROOM

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity for the preliminary hearing. News cameras flashed constantly behind the glass barriers.
Sarah sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, looking nothing like the polished socialite she once was. Beside her sat Julian, flanked by four top-tier defense attorneys.
Mark sat in the front row of the gallery, his face pale, trembling uncontrollably.
The judge pounded the gavel. "Order in the court. We are here to review the new physical evidence submitted by the prosecution regarding the death of Lily Miller."
The prosecutor stood up, holding a sealed evidence bag containing the gold signet ring.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor announced, "new DNA testing conducted on the interior band of this ring retrieved from the victim's autopsy file shows two profiles. The first belongs to the victim, Lily Miller. The second belongs to..."
The prosecutor paused, turning around to look directly at the public gallery.
"...the defendant, Mark Miller."
Gasps erupted through the courtroom.
Mark stood up frantically. "No! That's a mistake! Maya gave you that ring! She's setting me up!"

"Mr. Miller, sit down or you will be held in contempt!" the judge ordered.
"She’s lying!" Mark screamed, pointing at me where I sat quietly in the third row. "She planned this all along! She set us all up!"
