Chapter 4 - THE CONFESSION ON TAPE

The front door burst open, and three police officers strode into the hallway, guns unholstered at their sides.
"Nobody move!" the lead officer commanded.
"Officer!" Sarah shrieked, crawling toward them. "My daughter has lost her mind! She’s attacking us! Get her out of here!"
"Keep your distance, ma'am," the officer ordered. He turned his gaze to me. "Are you Maya Miller?"
"I am," I said, reaching slowly into my pocket and tapping my phone screen. "And I have the full audio recording from fifteen minutes ago, as well as the wiretap data from my sister’s archived phone."
Julian’s face went completely pale. "Wiretap? You're a minor!"
"I turned eighteen two weeks ago, Julian," I said with a bitter smile. "And for the last two years, I haven't been playing the role of the troubled, rebellious daughter for fun. I played it so you and my mother would think I was too stupid and angry to notice what you were doing."
Mark slumped against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor, his hands covering his face. The realization of how deeply he had failed both of his daughters hit him like a physical blow. He had spent years verbally abusing me, calling me ungrateful, calling me crazy, isolating me from friends and family—all to protect the woman who had murdered his eldest child and stolen his life savings.
"Maya..." Mark sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand toward me. "Maya, I... I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know..."
"You didn't want to know, Dad," I said, stepping back out of his reach. "It was easier to believe I was a terrible daughter than to admit your dream life was a nightmare."
The lead officer stepped forward, pulling out a set of handcuffs. "Julian Vance, Sarah Miller—you are both under arrest in connection to the active homicide reinvestigation of Lily Miller, as well as grand larceny and extortion."
May you like
"No! Mark, tell them! Tell them you love me!" Sarah shrieked as an officer forced her arms behind her back. "It was all for us! I did it so we could be rich!"
Mark didn't even look at her. He just stared at the fake belly pillow lying on the floor.
