Chapter 6 - THE FINAL PIECE

Mark lowered his head, weeping silently. "Where did I go wrong?"
"You wanted a picture-perfect life so badly that you let yourself be blinded by simple tricks," I said, putting my hand on the doorknob. "But there’s one last thing you need to know before I leave."
Mark looked up, wiping his eyes. "What?"
"Julian didn't act alone four years ago," I said. "And Mom wasn't the one who gave him the key to Lily’s car."
Mark’s breathing hitched. "What do you mean?"
I pulled a small black velvet box from my coat pocket and tossed it onto the empty counter. It bounced and popped open, revealing an old gold signet ring engraved with the initials M.M.
Mark’s eyes widened in horror. "That's... that's my father’s ring. I lost that six years ago."
"You didn't lose it," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Lily found it in Julian’s glove compartment after her accident. She swallowed it right before the crash so they couldn't hide it. The coroner missed it during the initial quick report, but when I requested the full forensic evidence transfer last week... they found it in the state evidence locker."

Mark’s jaw trembled. "Why... why would my ring be with Julian?"
"Because you didn't just turn a blind eye, Dad," I whispered, the final drop of venom leaving my lips. "You knew about the initial money laundering four years ago. You traded Lily’s inheritance to keep Julian’s funding coming in. You just didn't expect them to kill her."
