Chapter 5 - THE AFTERMATH

Three weeks later.
The Miller household was deathly quiet. The furniture was covered in dust sheets. Real estate signs lined the front lawn. The story had exploded across local news—a prominent architect’s wife exposed for faking a pregnancy, embezzling millions, and conspiring in the murder of her own stepdaughter alongside her billionaire lover.
I stood in the empty living room, holding a small duffel bag.
Mark stepped out of the kitchen. In just twenty-one days, he looked as though he had aged twenty years. His hair was streaked with grey, his face drawn and hollowed out. His company was bankrupt, his home was being foreclosed on, and his wife was awaiting trial without bail.
"You're leaving?" he asked quietly.
"My flight to Chicago leaves in two hours," I replied. "I got accepted into the university program. I have a scholarship."
Mark swallowed hard, taking a hesitant step forward. "Maya... please. Let me come with you to the airport. Let me buy you lunch. I know... I know saying 'I'm sorry' doesn't fix the four years of hell I put you through. I know I was blind. I chose her over you every single time."
"You did," I agreed, my tone flat. "When I cried because she ruined my clothes, you called me dramatic. When I showed you the strange bank statements, you grounded me for invasion of privacy. When she slapped me tonight, you stood there and let her."

"I was stupid!" Mark yelled, tears spilling over his sunken eyes. "I was an idiot who wanted to believe I was going to be a father again! I wanted a second chance!"
"You had a daughter standing right in front of you," I said softly. "You just didn't want me."
